This is pretty much the first thing I get asked when I tell people that I write steampunk. Basically, steampunk is a genre that features Victorian era settings (think Sherlock Holmes) with advanced technology powered by steam. These stories are pretty much all science fiction stories by definition, but they can also be fantasies, adventures, and pretty much every other genre. Basically, think "Treasure Planet" and "Wild Wild West".
