When Melisande is given a ring with a strange, glowing stone in it by her mother, she is stunned when it glows. The ring was passed down through her family, but when her mother tells her that the ring is going to put her in danger, Melisande is upset. She doesn't want the ring. She doesn't want to be hunted through the whole country. But when she finds the stone that the ring itself came from, Melisande is captured. From her cell, she watches as the scientists who are working with the stone itself dooms everyone. They tried to free it from the ground, but when they couldn't, they tried to blow it up. Unfortunately for them, that one act doomed all of humanity. Because then, a portal between worlds was torn open, and all kinds of beings and creatures humans had always thought of as fictional come through. The ensuing chaos is what kills most of the humans, but now, Melisande needs to figure out what she can do to try and help those who survived. Until she is once more captured. This time, by someone who came from the portal. And this being is ready to hurt Melisande, as well as her friends. This story is a combination of scifi, fantasy, and post-apocalyptic genres. The characters will all go through hell, but in the end, they must decide if it was worth it or if it was not.
