It's another average day for me during my spring recess from university. It's inappropriate to call it spring given the amount of coldness outside as I stare out my window. I release a deep breath to fog up the glass before drawing a tiny heart. It's then that I hear my mother yelling at my brother for a chore he failed to complete as he's rushing out the door for school.

I sigh, looking at the clock. It's only 8AM.

"Mom," I complain quietly. I should be sleeping until 1PM like a normal overtired college student, but here I am gawking outside like a five year old.

Enough time passes before silence finally fills my house. It's a risky move to attempt to get breakfast right now, but my stomach is growling. I know the moment I see my mother she will want me to do something, and I'm not in the mood today.

I take the risk, but it is already regrettable the moment I touchdown to the bottom of the stairs.

"Jae?" I hear her ask from the kitchen. Her super-sonic hearing never fails to amaze me. I purse my lips in discontent slightly as I make my way to her.

"Good morning," she says happily.

"Nothing is good about it yet," I reply. It comes out darker than I intend it to.

I take the box of Cheerios that my brother has left behind and start to fix myself a bowl.

"Your brother is such a slob. He really needs to take some lessons from you," she rolls her eyes dramatically.

I watch her hand slide across the countertop, using a sponge to pick up the lost remnants of the traditional lunchbox she packed for David. Hmph. She never made me lunches for high school. I always had to do it myself. You know how annoying it is to wake up earlier than I need to?

"You know..." she starts. Here we go.

"엄마 (mom)," I groan. I know she will get the hint if I start speaking to her like this.

"I just want you to be happy," she explains. Her forced smile through her contempt is clear as she stares at me with menacing eyes. I shove a mouthful of Cheerios in my mouth and munch quietly.

"I know, but come on. I will meet someone on my own time." I explain. I dig my spoon back into the bowl.

It's a constant battle between us. She is always setting me up with ridiculous men whom she found out about through her ongoing and ever growing list of friends. At this point I wish she asked me to vacuum or wash dishes rather than to be having this conversation.
