Daeus's POV

Once the human was asleep, the rest of my division got closer, curious of the guy that I held. We'd never seen a human in person before, but the countless times we'd seen pictures of them in the news gave us a clear picture of them. At this age, our Kings and scientists were still in an ongoing debate on whether humans were intelligent enough to be individual or not. Yet, this human was broken and damaged, different from the ones we had seen. I needed to get him to a vet before his head injury became serious, yet since my unit had found the ship and the bodies, I'd have to wait for my elder brother's unit because he was the head of this Sector.

Ekhad's are split into four kingdoms; Hornet, Yellowjacket, Wasp, and Bee. Each kindgom is then divided into Sectors, which is governed by one of the princes of the king. In our law, kings are only allowed to have as many children as there are Sectors. My father, King Harlem, broke that law so it left me under my eldest brother Ceasur's Sector. Inside those Sectors are Divisions - groups of four Ehkads that are never meant to veer away from each other and are destined mates from birth. Knights, like myself, are the Division leaders.

Despite all of that, I was left as the 12th, illegal prince in the Hornet Kingdom. Being a Knight was the highest rank I could ever have, yet as tradition among the royal family of the Hornet Kingdom, we are meant to travel to find that which is our other half - not our mate, we are born with that - but our Bond - a creature that has been destined for us and us for them. Bond's are valued and prized, to kill one is a death sentence and to take one away from its partner is a lifetime underground.

To get a better picture, Bond's are like a mate. Once you have them, you'd die without them. Bond's are more valued in an Ehkad's life than their mate is. To think that a human - something that may be intelligent - was my bond, it was unthinkable.

"What is your father going to say, Daeus?" Unit asked after a moment, his dark bronze eyes wide with worry. "Your whole lin-"

"Don't remind him, Unit!" Yupo, my mate, snarled. The only one in my family I was close to is Prince Ceasur. My father despised me. Knowing that I had such a Bond would only make him despise me further. He thinks a royal's bond should be feirce, strong, and large, but I think a Bond is meant to complete you, not reflect you.

"Ceasur just called," Mint interrupted, unaware of the tension. "He'll want to understand why you'll refuse to give the human up and know what happened." The lime green female came up to my side, her head slightly lowered. She examined the human in my arms and looked up at me. "I think what my mate was trying to say is to make sure your father doesn't hear of this. If King Harlem - who, if I have to remind you, is on the side of the humans being sentient, hear of this - he will order your Bond to be removed."

"I know," I mumbled, stroking my human's hair. He looked terrible. If I hadn't folded the broken wings around him, you'd see every bone in his body. You could tell he's been through shit and I hated it. If the Krovlotts weren't already dead, they'd would've died moments upon meeting me. My heart ached for him and I wanted nothing more than to make him better.

The sounds of paws drumming the ground caught our attention and Yupo came to stand beside me. Mint went to stand beside Unit, who was only a few feet away from Yupo. At the approach of Prince Ceasur, a peach-tinted red furred Ehkad with green eyes, we all bowed our heads in respect and kept our tails low. Whereas the rest of my Division held their arms out in customary welcome of a prince, I couldn't and only held on tighter to my human.

"Relax," Ceasur ordered, yet the Ehkads that were with him weren't any of his own Division. Instead he'd brought Niler's Division, one that was close to both of our Division's, but was head of the science group.

Niler and Nubus were identical with pastel red fur. Niler's mate, Milia had pinkish green fur and Nubus' mate Taur was completely silver with very little markings. They were a well respected Division, yet I couldn't place why Ceasur brought them instead of his own Division. It made me feel guarded and defensive, as if he had brought them to take away my human. I had to remain neutral though and took a few breaths to steady my thoughts and center my feelings.

"Explain to me what happened, little brother." Ceasur ordered, his voice gentle, as if he was talking to a child. It irritated me and I could feel my tail flicking a little, but I met his eyes and spoke evenly.

"As tradition in our family, I was heading out to look for my Bond. I was ready to board a ship to our allied planet when I got a call that my Division was needed to report to the upcoming scene of a crash. Immediately, Unit, Mint, and Yupo met me as we ran out here, following orders. We are a part of the search-and-rescue group as well as the main Division for the execution group. As was instructed by the Lookouts, an unidentified ship was barrelling toward our atmosphere." I looked to the wreckage and bared my canines at the stench that wafted from it. "What we found were bodies," I paused for a dramatic effect and took a deep breath. "Krovlott bodies."

A gasp came from Milia - head of the extralife science group. "But! Krovlotts are supposed to be extinct! They were wiped out in the BioWar when they tried turning once defenseless animals and races into weapons. We lost many brave species in that era."

"Or so we thought. Those bodies, I estimate around 20 on the outside and hundreds more in the body of the ship, are Krovlott. Ugly, terrible things. None of us have gone inside, but Mint's scanner pulled up countless bodies, more than just Krovlott." I looked over at Milia as I relayed the information before meeting my brother's eyes again and standing tall.

"Any survivors?" Ceasur demanded, his eyes narrowed down to the human in my arms.

"Only one," I answered honestly. "A human. From our observations, they had been starting up the BioWeapon experiments from a long time ago. If they hadn't crashed who knows how long they would have gone undetected." I glanced down at my human, wishing we'd have met under better circumstances, wondering if we'd ever have met at all. It's not uncommon for a Bond to never be found and those who never find there say it's as if they never have all of themselves.

Ceasur got closer and I had to stop myself from snarling at him as he moved the wing away from Void's body and examined the pale, sickly skin underneath as well as the scaled armor on his chest. "Give it over to Nubus and we'll take it back to lab, see if they can get it back to normal before returning it."

"Return it?" I finally snapped, taking a step back and jerking my upper body away from Ceasur. "This human is mine to care for. I will keep him and bring him back to health. He cannot go back to Earth!" And I had a high doubt sitting in the back of my mind that he would never want to.

Catching on, Niler brushed up against Ceasur and lowered his head to me so that I wouldn't subconciously see him as a threat. "You do realize that if you keep this human, you will force all efforts to making them an intelligent species and part of the Galactic Conference to stop. Keeping this human will allow passage to the rest of the species being labeled as an animal."

"He is my Bond, Niler." I looked up at my brother. "Ceasur, you have to understand. I cannot get rid of Void. He's my Bond. When you lost Dearey it almost broke you. Imagine if you took him away from me."

Ceasur was the one who bowed his head this time, his bottom two eyes misting. Dearey had been the off planet, Earthling tigress that had been his bond. She'd died five years after I was born in a small ship port battle with smugglers. "Get him to a vet. He'll need extensive care." Ceasur sighed as if defeated, but I remembered that he was nearly twice my age, not old for our kind, but not young either. Ehkad can live an average of 200 years. A 48 year old like Ceasur is young, but his mind is old and wise. He's always been that way. "But you will be the one helping me to show the scientists and the kings that humans cannot join us in the conference. You will present your Bond when he's better." Ceasur patte the top of Void's head. He looked lifeless and small in my arms. "Take care, little brother. I'd hate to see you lose something as precious as him and he looks to barely be hanging on."
