In Ninth Century Bretagne, Edithna is secretly a maenad, a follower of the pagan god Dionysus, living in a Christian nunnery. When a travelling monk dies in her infirmary, Edithna suspects his killer is a phantom that prowls the nearby forest. Edithna investigates, bearing with her the relic heart of a long dead bishop, which she believes is connected with the deadly creature. It will take all of her maenad courage and rage to defeat the supernatural foe. In peril is not just her life, but her own immortal soul. "The Bishop's Heart" is one of the "Tales of the Maenads", a set of companion stories to the forthcoming trilogy, "Fallen Gods".
