Cass had promised herself not to. She had sworn to herself that she would follow the rules, that she would suppress the curiosity that ate her from within, and that she would not speak. But now, looking at those eyes she had seen for so long in her dreams, she wasn't so sure anymore. And so, almost without realizing it, Cass had spoken for the first time with a human being. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Will the revolt begin with silence? In the District, the population is divided into three social classes: the Elevated , the Normals and the Downlows . Cass, as Normal, cannot have access to books or films and, above all, cannot speak or make physical or visual contact with anyone. Penalty: to be subjected to the terrible Punishments. The District is constantly supervised and controlled by the Order, a council made up of members whose identities are unknown. Cass feels that her life is meaningless, and the only thing that gives her peace from time to time, is to go to the municipal library, even if she cannot read the books contained there. It will be in the library that Cass will have a strange encounter that will open a new door for her: maybe it will be the one that will lead her to freedom?
