Visual and literary propaganda created a cult of personality around Elizabeth. From the 1570s onward, in particular, a carefully manufactured image was created – the cult of 'Gloriana' was developed to make Elizabeth an object of worship for her people.
Portraits contained symbolic objects:
globes, crowns, swords and columns - reminded people of empire & power
Moons and pearls - represented virginity and purity
