This is a loose retelling of the story of the Trojan War, inspired by medieval romances set during that epic conflict, and influenced as much by chivalric courtly love, William Shakespeare and Geoffrey Chaucer as by Homer and Greek mythology.

Briseis, my heroine, is a composite of several different characters. Of course, there's the slave woman from The Iliad who is the cause of the feud between Achilles and Agamemnon, with whom she shares a name and role in the story. There's also Polyxena, a Trojan princess who is romantically linked with Achilles in medieval and early modern romances such as Shakespeare's "Troilus and Cressida." The name Briseis means "daughter of Briseus" and in some versions of the myth, her real name is Hippodamia, which also happens to be the name of a half-sister of the Trojan hero, Aeneas- I found this out after I decided to make her Aeneas' sister in this version.

The settling will be more medieval than Ancient Greek. Troy and its culture are inspired by the Turkish Ottoman Empire because Anatolia, the region of Western Asia where Troy is believed to have been situated, is now part of Turkey.
