THE MONSTER SPEAKS:
Born in this new land again, from weary parts already resurrected, I stare and stare at the sea because I have never seen before that which is ocean. What is ocean? but a great pregnant goddess, heaving to give birth, yet ready to swallow up any, all, to feed the hungry void that is the foetus that was her heart. Swallow me not, for I have yet to experience the joys of walking on water. Earth lighter than air, and water conquered by a fire that is I...I shall swallow that water up, and out of my music of profoundest despair shall sing my song of fire, of being surrounded by all-burning flame. I, bringer of fire, creation of fire, destruction of fire - Quench this fire! oh you merciless creator, you who gave birth to your monstrous creation. It burns too bright, this pure black flame, this misery of existing knowing. To know is a prison. To be is a torment - being in this existing knowing - and the universe gives no assent but a command; and the command is know.
