Chapter Four: Eavesdropping

I stare at the building my best friend is inside and pull the key out of the ignition.

Should I just walk in and say hi?

Sighing, I glance down at my phone.

I have a text from three minutes ago.

Danny: crystal showed up. I knew it

I cringe.

This is going to escalate the situation, but Danny would pick me over her, right?

After giving myself multiple pep talks, I unbuckle my seatbelt and get out of the car. With my drivers license and debit card in my phone case, I force myself to walk into Big Shark, a surf shack that Danny works at.

I keep my head down and move behind a clothes rack, peeking towards the counter.

And there he is, leaning his left hip against it with his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes are trained on a girl who's standing on the other side of the counter in a mini skirt and a tank top. Her blonde hair looks unnatural and most likely bleached. Her skin is tanned.

Danny wears a white t-shirt that grips to his chest. On the front of the shirt is a shark and the words Big Shark. He has on a pair of dark and light blue striped swim trunks and they ride low enough for me to see the waistband of his boxers.

But I'm astounded at how tall he is. When he left Maryland, I was four or five inches taller than him.

Now, however, he's easily four of five inches taller than me. His muscles are huge and I know all the time he hangs up FaceTime to go running or to the gym really has paid off.

His blonde hair is messy and he looks like a surfer.

I have no idea how to approach him, so I decide to eavesdrop.

I move a rack closer to him.

"I mean, I just can't believe you cheated on me." Crystal says.

Her voice makes me shudder.

This is was his potential girlfriend?

He needs to work on his taste in woman.

"I didn't cheat on you because we weren't dating, and Grace and I are just friends."

"Yeah but every relationship starts with the people being friends." She snaps.

"Grace is different." Danny insists.

"That's what you said about Madison in freshmen year." Crystal insists.

"Yeah, but I haven't seen Madison naked."

I face palm.

Idiot. He's an idiot.

I hear her shriek and I start shaking with silent laughter.

His coworker who is organizing a t-shirt rack near me is snickering and shaking his head.

"You've seen her naked?!" Crystal shrieks.

"Well...I mean, yeah." Danny replies.

I peek out from the rack and see him rubbing the back of his neck. His whole face is pink and I have to put my fist against my mouth to keep myself from laughing out loud.

"Well...well admit she's ugly and I'll stay with you!" Crystal says.

I hold my breath.

"Crystal, I don't want to be with you. I think you're crazy."
