Another interesting use of biology in love is the concept of heartbreak. Heartbreak can give a person an acute increase of emotional stress caused by the previously mentioned neurotransmitters (catecholamines) adrenalin and noradrenalin, and it hurts so much because the brain registers it as a physical pain instead of simply an emotional one.
Prolonged stress can even lead to paralyzation of the left ventricle of the heart's muscle provoking heart attack-like symptoms because the ventricle is dilated and won't contract correctly. The medical term for this broken heart syndrome is Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, caused by emotional stress. This condition is called after the Japanese octopus trap pot because the enlarged ventricle looks like a vase. Fortunately, this all is temporary in most cases people recover within a couple of months.
