Chapter 3-Sleep Beside Me

The rice pudding energised both of them a little, and Lanhua went off to take a bath. She thanked heavens there was an attached spring bath in her new house she couldn't help but wonder how Xian had been staying in such a big house by himself. Preparing a bath was also intensely energy-consuming, but it felt very satisfying when she soaked in the warm water. Lanhua felt light as a feather after the bath. Rather, she felt a little lightheaded. She made her way to the bedroom and quite literally crashed into the bed where Xian lay.

Her hair was still wet and some droplets of water glistened on her eyelashes. It felt a bit awkward sleeping in the same bed as him, but she had also woken up beside him; Lan Hua rationalised her choice and decided to share the quilt with him. Xian felt the tips of his ears become red. "Please use another quilt," he muttered softly. "I don't know where to get one from," she replied immediately. She felt he was being a little harsh. She was extremely tired, and what if she fainted again? "I don't feel well enough to search for one tonight; rest assured, I won't share your quilt again." They are in the storage room near the kitchen." he said coldly. LanHua had heard enough that she didn't want him to get the wrong idea or think she was too interested in him. She rolled out of the quilt, gathered her side of it, and flung it all towards him. "Keep it all; I will find it more comfortable to freeze." She was obviously agitated and was also stubborn. She didn't even move to retrieve a quilt for herself. Xian saw her frail body shiver in the cold her hair still looked wet. This woman was strange. He had only asked her to sleep in a different blanket, and that too for her own sake, but she had reacted like he had asked her to sleep on the floor. Moreover, she was willing to suffer in the cold just to do as she pleased. Was she just immature or actually not in a position to move? Whatever it was she would be more troublesome if she caught a cold and she had gone out of her way to save him. Xian saw the girl was already asleep he moved as much of the quilt over her as he could.

Lan Hua woke up and noticed she hadn't been left out to freeze. In fact, she had most of the quilt. Poor Xian was barely covered. She let out a pitiful smile. After all he must have had some pity on her. The man next to her had a painful expression on his face. He was in pain. If only she could hand him a painkiller. She felt a little bad. She didn't know how to help ease his pain. She moved the quilt towards him. After fixing up her appearance and changing into a light green dress found amongst the wedding gifts, she made her way to the kitchen and prepared some tea and butter rice porridge. She wasn't the best cook in any universe, but she could still make simple yet tasty food. She ate her fill in the kitchen and took a serving to Xian's bedside. She figured she should wake him up for food since he needed to eat to recover. She woke him up by tapping his hand. He woke up with a few painful groans.

"Husband, I have prepared something to eat."

"I do not care for food." he sniffled. "Perhaps you should... you must eat to regain some energy." she retaliated. "Have you eaten?" he asked, and she told him she had eaten earlier in the kitchen.

She jokingly said, "it's not poison, the spoon is silver, and it looks normal see."

He looked into her eyes seriously and took the dish from her hands. Was he actually worried she would poison him? why would she bother taking care of him if she wanted to poison him.

A little irritated, she blurted. "Please take a bath after you eat; you reek," she said half-heartedly, upon realising he had been bedridden for a few days. The colour of Xian's face became red, Lan Hua was unsure if this was out of anger or embarrassment. She bit her tongue, not wanting to offend him and mumbled, "I am sorry.." " I would like a bath, but the spring is inconvenient." he lifted up the quilt, almost like he was reminding her of the wound she had treated, but he drew her attention to his right foot. His veins were black, almost like something was slowly poisoning him. She couldn't help but feel guilty about her poison joke from earlier. She was so intrigued by what she witnessed she instinctively moved towards his leg to touch it, "Stop don't touch it!", he exclaimed; how could this woman touch something so hideous when Xian could barely get himself to even see his own leg. "Is it poisoned? Was it an arrow?" he didn't reply to her question. " I cannot bathe, so just use another quilt."
