Just a quick note because I don't have too much to say about this book other than read it.

A Classic of classics. It starts out awesome, suffers from a boring middle section, and then the ending torture bit was phenomenal. I loved the ending and how it didn't turn out all sunshine and rainbows and had a negative arc for Winston. It really shows the true power of the Big Brother regime to wipe out someone as strong-willed as Winston, and it reveals the power of mob mentality, among other things.

The one thing that I really couldn't sit through was the pages and pages of The Book that Winston was given. It was boring, spouting ideas we'd already been shown in the book thusfar through Winston's daily life. And then at the end of the section, Winston even says something like "This was all stuff I already knew". So why include it in the book? I honestly skimmed and skipped a lot of it, and the sections I did force myself to read didn't add anything to my understanding of the story.

Overall, definitely a book to read during your lifetime. It was a real downer though, so not something I'd want to read a second time.
