When Odin and his brothers were creating Asgard, they had the five infinity gemstones based on the five elements made.
While the dwarven blacksmiths were crafting the gemstones, a meteor strikes Asgard and in the aftermath, Odin discovers the stone 'Amethyst'.
'The Wise' makes a prophecy that Amethyst will lead to the destruction of both worlds- Asgard and Earth.
When Odin asks for a solution, he is told that five people will be born on earth bearing the power of the five elements. The only way to defeat 'The Omnipotent' bearing the amethyst would be to concentrate the power of the five infinity stones simultaneously on the amethyst.
After the prophecy, Odin gets the five infinity gemstones embedded in the form of rings and has them sent to various parts of Earth.
