"Gabriel, turn off the TV!"

"In a minute, mom!"

Why won't she let me be me? I'm already eighteen, I can do whatever I want. But she's my mom, and dad wouldn't be too happy with me right now if I don't listen to her. I run upstairs to check on Jessie.

"Jess, are you doing alright?"

Cough.

"Did they find dad yet?"

She's too young to be worrying about this. That's mine and mom's job.

"Hey, I'm sure he'll be home soon. He does a lot of work for the government, maybe he got pulled away for something and can't tell anyone yet."

Except we both know that it's a lie. But it calms her down and she turns on her side.

"Gabriel, please don't leave me."

"It's going to be okay, I'll be right in the other room. I'll see you in the morning."

That was the last night that anything would be okay.
