From everything I'd read to prepare for this trip, our next destination sounded like the most incredible place for the nerd in me. Located about thirteen miles south of Seoul, it was a massive complex that hosted over a hundred buildings, including four office towers.

If the administrative headquarters were in Seoul, this was the heart and soul of the tech supergiant. This was where the magic happened, where most of the work occurred.

It was an entire city within a city, with thousands of employees, daycare centers, medical facilities, multiple sports fields like soccer, badminton, basketball, baseball, and even an Olympic swimming pool. The place had its own bus station, with shuttles that picked up employees and drove them home every day, and a heliport. There was a hotel to host foreign researchers, several restaurants that served food for free, and a museum dedicated to their history.

I was bubbling with excitement when we arrived, impatient to discover all of this. They'd sent a car for us at the hotel, and the chauffeur had driven us away without a word. After a relatively silent drive, we were now passing the gates to enter the amazing facilities. I was feeling particularly energetic today, and I wasn't sure if the cause was our program or the morning swim.

When the car stopped, someone was already waiting for us by the building's entrance. Once we were out of the BMW, the man introduced himself, Mr. Myung, and gave us our visitor badges. He explained he would show us around. He was about my age and very dynamic, his English flawless, only a small accent lingering.

He walked us to the lobby of one of the office towers, where a large map of the facilities was displayed. He gave us a rundown of the premises, explaining the functionalities of each building.

Once we had a good grasp of the layout, he took us on a quick tour. The place was truly amazing, with many programs in place to benefit the employees. I would sometimes tease Lex about some of it, especially when we passed the food court and its ninety-two daily menus.

According to Mr. Myung, the company he worked for was not the main job provider around here, but was also offering health services to the families of their employees, sports facilities, daycare, and a plethora of other things. Being here, seeing all this, made it clear why the company's income represented 17% of Korea's gross domestic product. It was an industrial titan, and we were privileged to be visiting its core.

The tour lasted about two hours, until Mr. Myung dropped us to the fanciest restaurants of the facility and told us we were free to stroll around for the rest of the day, sticking to the areas our badges allowed us to enter. Whenever we were ready to leave, all we had to do was to ask for a car at the reception in the main building, and a chauffeur would be assigned to us.

During our lunch together, Lex and I debriefed on everything we'd seen, his eyes just as bright with excitement as mine. The food was delicious, the company enjoyable, so we lingered here for longer than we thought.
