Stars

The lightbringers, a symbol of defiance against the infinite sea of darkness that was the cosmos, for their mere presence splashed it with life and color long after they had perished

To the romantic, a symbol of hope, love, and the future

To the curious, a destination

But everyone had at some point wondered what it would be like to venture into the stars, to see what lied beyond the sky they saw every night

Very few could accomplish such a feat

Even fewer did it without regret

...

Stars

Bleeding, broken. A horrid mess of light and blood trapped in a dark canvas the likes of which could not be recognized

Here she bore witness to constellations mankind could never hope to see. Planets shattered, before her very eyes

Far, far away from any semblance of her precious home

And yet, all she could do was lie on the cold and unforgiving stone

Her body burned, it hurt with every cold breath her punctured lungs tried to take, and yet, she moved, she pushed herself

"Get up"

She repeated to herself, again and again, despite the many warnings. Despite the black shards of glass piercing her leg, or the blood running down her face

She rose once again and paid the punishment for her defiance

Child-like laughter

Deafening, monstrous, heart-shattering

"I gotta say, I'm impressed"

A chilling fear ran down her spine as her eyes followed the voice

Her. The cause of all this ruin

Her. The one they failed to destroy

Her

"Somehow, you managed to get them killed. Every. single. one"

With another monstrous laughter, she spread her arms, revealing the bodies and rubble that surrounded her

Corpses

Allies

Friends

...lovers

"How many more have to die before you finally learn your lesson?"

She let out a cry of pain as her body forced her onto her knees. The pain of many battles and allies lost weighing stronger than her own spirit

The shadows crept closer and closer until she felt a cold hand caressing her face, connecting her eyes with those of madness itself

Slowly, silhouettes emerged, pitch black
