The Future Utopia

My eyes fluttered open as my alarm clock rang, The noise cutting through my eardrums like a knife cutting through butter.

"Okay, Okay! I get it!" I growled and hit the rest on the clock. I sighed and got out of bed. "Another wonderful day in the slums." I told myself sarcastically. It was already 7:00AM. A later time than I usually woke up, I usually woke around 4:55 to 5:30AM. I always liked to tell myself that waking up early was a way of having good luck.

I stretched and wearily made my way to my sorry excuse of a bathroom. I turned the faucet and watched the cold-water rush into the drain. I swear that the water was just acid water. Shrugging off the thought of the water I was using being fatal to my health. I cupped my hands under the running faucet until I was satisfied with the amount of water in my hand and splashed my face.

I sighed and looked at myself in the mirror. I didn't look someone who could manipulate shadows. Heck, I didn't even look that threatening. I had somewhat, long, dark brown hair, eyes the color of dark cedar wood and tan skin.  I was only about 5"10; not half as tall as the other people living down here. I was also Greek. I had lived in Greece almost all of my live. Then my family was forced to sell to one of the corporal bosses.

I walked into the main room of my apartment and searched in the drawer for something to wear. I put on a pair of loose, dark, denim jeans, a black, long sleeved shirt and some dark leather, fingerless gloves. After that I walked into my closet and put on a pair of my dark brown, steel-toed boots.

I walked outside of my apartment afterwards. Even though it was morning. You couldn't see the sun due to the overbearing pollution slithering down from the upper city like a giant, smoky snake of death.

"The local police are going to find me... and when they do... I'll be ready.." I darkly smirked.

With that in mind, I decided to start my day early by heading up to the Upper-City. I never really liked it there too much. Yeah, it was nice and clean. But besides that, nothing ever happened. There were stores as far as the eye could see. The streets were so clean you could see your reflection and everyone wore pure, clean, white jumpsuits. So naturally I stood out like a sore thumb. I registered a lot of strange and fowl looks by the residents of this utopia.

"Honey, don't look at that... Thing." I overheard a mother tell her young daughter. I rolled my eyes. I had almost forgotten how prejudge this people were. I had lived up here for a short time in my early teenage years as a servant to one of the big, corporal bosses. But I after a turn of events I ended up leaving. It didn't end up good for anyone involved though.

"That's what I'm looking for." I thought, looking at a huge apartment complex standing a good mile away from me. The building shined like a flawless pearl in a crystal clear stream. I had a hunch that I would find something here.

I had made my way into the building without almost any obstacles, or interference by workers. But that was quickly shattered when two staff workers walked up to me. "I haven't seen you around..." The first one remarked. He wore the normal uniform that I would have expected to see around a place like this. He had slicked back, white hair, grey eyes and a very thin face. He wore a white, sleeveless jumpsuit and dark grey, knee high boots. The second worker was dressed exactly identical. Except his eyes were light red and he was

shorter.

"Yes, I haven't seen you around here either. Are you new?" The second added. I had a feeling the first one was getting suspicious of me.

"They have no shadows, and it's too bright in here..." I thought, biting down on my bottom lip hard enough to draw some blood. "... I can't kill them now..." I thought to myself as I wiped blood off my lip with my index finger. "I'm bleeding." I told the second guard, holding up my index finger for him to see. He didn't look as regal, or intelligent as what I assumed was his superior. Most likely he was the student. "Sir, he is bleeding--"

"Wait, let me see the blood." His superior abruptly pushed him out of the way and grabbed my wrist. I swear he had superhuman strength. Since the whole time he had my wrist in his grip I felt like it was being crushed, I could hear my bones breaking almost. He looked over his underling with a stern look and let go of my hand. I softly gasped as I felt my arms being roughly forced behind my back.

"Erik Schatten, you are arrested for murder, thievery and violation of the law." He told me. "I killed a lot of people... Let me go, or you'll be next." I said in low growl, not loud enough for him to hear. He snapped his fingers and started to walk away into a dim hallway a couple yards away from us.

"You have a very black slate, Schatten. Tell me... When did you first kill someone?" The superior asked me. The dim lights made it hard enough see, but just enough to create a shadow. I smirked. This was my change to kill them both. "Idiot, εγώ θα σε σκοτώσω εγώ, αν δεν σκάσε(1)." I mumbled in my native language of Greek. The turned around to face me, "Please, Schatten. Try to refrain from speaking Greek." He sighed loudly, pinching the bridge of his nose. I closed my eyes and prepared myself to attack. We were in the middle of the hallway and I had recovered all my energy.

"Σκοτάδι, τους επιτεθεί!(2)" I screamed, and yanked my hands out of his grip. He gasped in shock and took a few steps back as a huge, 8'11, ghastly, shadowy, humanoid-like creature with cat-like, growing red eyes and sharp, razor-like claws. The creature let out a blood-curling scream and sliced the underling to shreds. The superior gasped and tried to run off but was quickly cut down when the creature slashed his back, cutting his spinal cord and killing him instantly. "Σκοτάδι, επιστροφή." I ordered and the creature returned back into the ground. "I need to get going." I told myself, trekking farther into the building.                                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
