It wasn't because Sasha was stupid, far from it. Other candidates were simply better. Nothing more, but in most cases that's enough.

It was always so easy in the movies. Despite all the problems, circumstances and adversities the protagonists had, they always got their scholarship or at least a place at the university in the end. No matter what it looked like. Or they got into an equal or better university that they never thought they would get into. It always works out in the end, that's all.

Real life was a bit different.

College is overrated.

So Sasha had to go to work instead of sitting in a lecture hall thinking about what she wanted to do for the next forty years.
