T A R Z A N

As I looked past the horrific scene before me, I quickly ran up my tree house in hopes of finding my wife and son safe. I peeked my head through the door. There, ahead of me, was an oversized silhouette of a body lying lifelessly on my bed. Next to that figure was my son, crying his eyes out.

My mind was in complete shock. I suddenly felt my breath hitched every time my feet stepped forward. My arms picked up my distressed son, who desperately cuddled himself into me and relaxed as soon I gave him soft kisses on his head.

As I set my eyes once again on the figure near us, I could see blood puddled underneath her dress. The horrified mug she had before she was brutally murdered was nothing but filled with pure fear. I grimaced at the sight. Tazee ordered me to carry him to his now-passed mother. My body bent down, allowing Tazee to use his right hand to close his mother's eyes so she would rest forever peacefully.

From that moment on, I vowed to get revenge on the bastard who killed my wife. What lay before me was not an ordinary raid. It was an act of warning, but these men were in over their heads. They honestly did not know what was coming for them.

As I gripped my son harder, tears started to roll down both our faces.

Tazee took hold of my chin and spoke.

"It's okay dad, there was nothing you can do, you were already off to kill the others, these other men came out of no where." he explained.

"The others here tried to fight back but obviously failed, they had an advantage because they blocked every escape," he continued.

I took his smaller hands into mine and kissed the side of his cheeks, and I earned a chuckle from his parted lips.

"It's okay son," I replied.

After we bid my wife a final farewell, Tazee was placed onto my back. Tazee held firmly onto my neck, and we both descended from the tree house. We finally landed safely on the jungle floor.

"I'm sorry for your loss, Tarzan," a familiar voice said beside me.

My head turned slightly as I looked and noticed my mother trying to comfort me with her pitiful eyes.

I returned a sincere smile. My mother came and sat next to me, followed by the rest of my pack, as we tried to mourn our tragic loss.

"Well well well, look what we have here..."

The sound of leaves cracking behind me caught my attention. I turned around and faced the group of crooks behind all this. Tazee was pushed behind my mother, who was forced further back for safety, along with everyone else.

"What do you want! You already killed my wife so leave!" I growled.

That only made him more amused. He threw a piece of paper before me, which landed perfectly on my foot. I looked down and tried to read the words plastered on it. I sighed in solace when I realized the many months of writing and reading classes I endured were not useless.

"Proctor's Exotic Animals..." I muttered.

"Wow, monkey boy knows how to read," he chuckled.

Monkey Boy? Fucking asshole.

"You bastard! get the fuck off my land!" I yelled as I chucked the paper back at him.

"And why should I?" he replied.

The man started to laugh as he turned around to look at his men.

I took the chance and told my entire troop, including my son, to run as far as they could away from there.

"GO NOW!" I ordered as I turned around.

They did not protest and soon ran into the jungle for safety. But what caught me off guard were my son's screams.

"Dad! No! Let me go!! Please I want my daddy!" he yelled.

My heart wrenched in pain. One of the bastard's men caught my son as he tried to flee, with the others going the wrong way.

"Let him go you hear!, you don't have to kill him...he's a kid!" I roared.

The man in front of me only chuckled in response. He then stepped ever so cautiously toward me.

"I'll let him go, but in return for ruining my purpose of being here, let me kill you instead," he smirked.

"Not a chance," I replied angrily.

I quickly ran to the man and put a blow to his midsection, which succeeded. He crouched in pain as he released Tazee from his grip.

"RUN NOW SON!" I screamed.

Tazee grunted and ran toward my mother, who waited on the sidelines far away. They retreated into the trees and disappeared quickly. I pulled my attention away from my mother and son and returned it to the man before me. I promptly took the chance to strike another blow, this time to his face, and somehow, the rage that surged through me knocked the man unconscious.

All of his men quickly pulled back their guns and ran toward their fallen leader.

I slowly stepped backward, ensuring none of the men were paying attention to me. I took the chance and ran away, leaving all the men alive as I wouldn't be fighting them off alone.

"Dad, you're okay!" Tazee screamed. I managed to find my entire troop hiding a good distance away from the intruders, and I quickly bent down to catch my son in my arms.

My whole body trembled at the near thought of being dead and leaving everyone behind without my protection.

"Yes, I am, son, yes, I am..." I muttered into his hair as I smelled his scent, reminiscing about the day I first laid my eyes on him. I quickly scooped him up when, suddenly, everyone bombarded me with their questions about the poachers.

"No need to worry everyone. I took care of everything-" I stated, "-They won't bother us anymore." I nervously smiled.

I wasn't going to have them know that I didn't kill them but fled the whole scene instead.

A few minutes later, I felt Tazee's body relax as I noticed he had fallen asleep in my arms. The troop and I decided to find a new and hopefully safer place to reside, where no one could bother us again.
