Of Jean's final years I know little. He retreated to the island, taking a wife from a passing ship – or perhaps purchasing her – a wretched creature from some tropical land who bore him a brood of filthy, feral children. I don't know what happened to his family after his death, but when, years later, I visited the island again, it was uninhabited.
