AS SOON AS TANSY HAD GONE FOR THE NIGHT, Theo bolted the door.

With a rime of sweat dampening his wise and worthy brow, he paced around his shop. He had no idea where to begin.

He'd done some light reading at the Institute, of course; it was standard for sorcerers-in-training to pursue introductory studies in all manner of arcane arts. Invocation, though, was nothing to be undertaken lightly. He needed to do more research to prepare.

Moving with sudden purpose, Theo strode to his work bench. He rummaged underneath until he located a large tome he had borrowed from the Hidden Library of Mysteries. He'd been studying feverishly throughout his experiments, but he had tried all the solutions in this book and a dozen others; they had been no use.

An invocation could be a solution.

It was also bound to be the most dangerous solution.

It was, undoubtedly, a very, very bad idea.

But he had to do it.

Theo pulled on his cloak with a flourish, took up his walking stick (which he did not need, but which provided a very wizardly affect to his ensemble), stuck his borrowed book under his arm, and left the shop through the back door.
