     As much as he ordered himself to drive in the opposite direction of Billie's apartment, his BMW kept advancing.

     His second meeting with The Ravens was a success, and tonight was his christening into their world. Escorting Billie to her apartment hours before the meeting was just to help her bring boxes with materials loaded into the back of her car. That's what they told themselves, and it's what JR had difficulty convincing himself of.

       Through his windshield, he saw Billie's black Mercedes-Benz slide through the parted gates of her apartment complex

       Through his windshield, he saw Billie's black Mercedes-Benz slide through the parted gates of her apartment complex. He found a spot on the curb for his car one block away, locked it, and took step after dangerous step in the direction of the elevators. 

     He reminded himself that this was business, that it didn't matter how hot Billie made him

     He reminded himself that this was business, that it didn't matter how hot Billie made him. She was off-limits, and yet he came up with every excuse to escalate the encounter if an opportunity presented itself.

     He and Billie arrived at the elevators at the same time. She wore a tight black dress and her pixie haircut fluffed, as if she knew the effect she had on him.

     She pressed the Up button on the elevator. "Ready for tonight?"

     The question sounded so clandestine, even if he knew what she meant. "Do you think I am?"
