Vitamin B2 also known as riboflavin helps the body build red blood cells and plays a critical role in the energy cycle which involves the breakdown of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates to assist with energy production. Vitamin B2 is commonly found in dairy products such as milk, yogurt, and cottage cheese, but it is also present in fruits and vegetables such as asparagus, bananas, soybeans, almonds, as well as in meat, eggs, salmon, and tuna. A deficiency of Vitamin B2 is characterized by a reddening of the lips with cracks at the corners of the mouth, inflammation of the tongue, and ariboflavinosis which is a condition that involves the development of sores on the mouth. The primary risk of an overdose of Vitamin B2 involves damage to the liver, this is however extremely rare given that in order to build a toxic level within the blood stream would require the ingestion of an impossibly large quantity of food as well as the fact that Vitamin B2 is water soluble which results in immediate excretion of excess through urination.
