Vitamin K, also known as phylloquinone or menaquinones plays a crucial role in bone metabolism, blood clotting, and assists with the regulation of blood calcium levels. It accomplishes these tasks by making the proteins necessary for such reactions to occur. Deficiency is rare and is typically only seen by those on a long term treatment option with antibiotics, and those with a malabsorption condition. Symptoms of a deficiency include impaired and prolonged clotting of the blood, potential hemorrhaging and excessive bleeding. Good sources of Vitamin K are avocado, kiwi fruits, leafy green vegetables, parsley, and dark berries.
