Millie's limbs were heavy as she ran. Though the screaming of the bombs was all around, it sounded dull, as though it was all underwater. All she could hear was the sound of her ragged breath, the throbbing pound of her heart, and in the distance, her sister—

"Millie!"

Pristine white robes swished across the floorboards as the nun marched down the aisle between the desks. She came to a stop beside a desk where a girl was folded forward, fast asleep. The nun lingered for a moment, all eyes watching, before she slammed the yardstick down on the edge of the desk.

With a gasp, Millie shot up in her seat. Her short curls were stuck to her face, and she hurried to brush them free. She blinked hard, for a moment forgetting where she was until her eyes trailed up to meet the nun's hardened stare. In her hand was a yardstick, and she was brandishing it like a weapon as if she was threatening to hit Millie with it next.

Knowing Sister Marion, she just might.

"Were we boring you, Mildred?"

Millie straightened her shoulders.

"N-No, sister. I-I just didn't get much sleep last night."

"Well class is not the place to catch up," Sister Marion warned. "You would do well to focus on your studies. After all, you are very lucky to be with us at Wickford."

Millie frowned. She did not think she was lucky at all.

Sister Marion gave her desk another smack before she swept away, back up the aisle. As she left, Millie noticed the other students were staring, watching her with mild interest, before they, too, turned away.

Millie sighed and turned to look out the window.

The day was as dreary as ever. It felt as though winter would never end. Millie rested her head on her hand, and felt herself begin to doze off once again...

Then her eye caught at the sight of something coming up the drive. A sleek green car. As it came to the edge of the courtyard, it swung out and came to a stop parallel to the house. The doors opened, and a stern man stepped out, followed by a girl Millie had never seen before... A pretty girl, with tanned skin and indigo-black hair pulled back from her face with a twist.

As if she could feel Millie's stare, she looked up. Her gaze met Millie's, and she smiled.

As Millie stared back, something stirred within her.
