"DESPERATION."

october, 2023

ONE ASPECT THAT MADE LE'ANA AND Paige so familiar with each other was their passion for basketball. At any moment the pair would find a way to play their beloved sport, whether in their dorms, on the court or even in their dreams. It was a simple method to get their minds off their social lives, such as the night in Paige's room.

It had been a few days since Le'ana and Paige's unspoken night. That's all it was, unspoken. Since that night, neither of the girls bought it up despite their aching need to. Sure Paige thought of it every day for the past week and Le'ana caught herself replaying it in her mind wishing she would do things differently.

As a means of calming herself down, Paige wondered if Le'ana wanted to practice some shots with her. The problem was that it had been an hour since she messaged Le'ana, yet a reply was absent.

Giving up, Paige headed to the gym herself. Maybe the girl was just busy. She simply wanted to just put her headphones in and zone out. It gave Paige some time to think to herself. This was now her second year being injured and she couldn't help but feel like she was missing out on so much.

As the media spoke, whether it be about Caitlin Clark or Angel Reese, Paige couldn't help but feel forgotten. She had worked so hard in high school and her freshman year, just for the world to ignore her after two injuries. There was always some fear in the back of her mind that she would never be the same. To prevent that, Paige made sure she spent every possible minute playing basketball, including now.

She was taking simple shots, fear of ruining her knee further making it necessary. Frustration took over Paige as she kept missing each shot. In a pure rage, she flung the ball across the court, her arm hitting her knee in the process.

Within a sudden movement, Paige dropped to the floor, clutching her brace as a scream was let out. Unable to move, Paige glanced around the room spotting her phone a couple metres away on the bench. Slowly the girl stood up hobbling over as tears formed in her eyes. As if it was muscle memory her phone knew exactly who to call. Her finger hovered over Le'ana's contact as she awaited an answer.

As the phone rang, despite being in pain, Paige stopped to analyse Le'ana's profile picture. It was an adorable 0.5 photo taken the first day they met where she was pouting into the camera, eyebrows furrowed as they typically are. Whilst distracted by her friend's beauty, Paige took notice of how Le'ana was not picking up as she let out a soft whimper. The pain was getting unbearable.

Paige hung up and called Nika who, unlike the former, immediately answered. Nika had no time to question what had happened to Paige as she led her into the medical room.

Nika's heart crumbled at the screams and pain visibly exhibited by Paige. As she was undergoing her check-up Nika could've sworn she heard Paige mutter the name of their newest transfer. The whole team had noticed a closeness between the two girls but now it was more evident than ever. Nika took notice of Le'ana's contact below hers. She was aware she wasn't Paige's first call and she was glad. Secretly, all the girls awaited the day the pair would get together.

What confused Nika was why Le'ana hadn't answered.  She was sure the girl wasn't busy, having messaged her multiple times today asking irrelevant questions Nika knew the girl was fine. Yet, when Paige needed her most she was nowhere to be seen.

Actually, she was seen. Exactly as Nika helped Paige into her car, preparing to comfort her all night, their eyes both caught sight of Le'ana. She wasn't alone as she stood beside another girl they recognised from around campus.

What was different about Le'ana and this mystery girl's stroll to Paige and Le'ana's stroll a week ago was how the girls' hands were interlinked. All Paige could make out was a silhouette of Le'ana - one she had so perfectly studied that she was now able to identify it in the dark. A laugh was emitted from Le'ana. Funny, one girl sat crying for reasons other than her injury, whilst another had no clue, simply laughing over another girl.

"She can't be that funny," Paige spoke, now tired of the day. Nika began to laugh at the obvious anger in her voice.

It got worse as the random girl's hand left Le'ana's, to which Paige wouldn't admit but she let out a sigh of relief but that was taken away once this random person's arm was draped around Le'ana's shoulder.

It was fair of Le'ana, neither of them had any courage to discuss what had occurred in bed that one night, so the sight in front of Nika and Paige was understandable.

Still, Paige was sure to send Le'ana a simple goodnight message when she got back. She was too nice to not do so, so not getting an answer wasn't a big deal for her - Paige just hoped Le'ana was happy. Whether that be with her or another person, it was nice to see the girl fitting in.
