"I DON'T KNOW, G

"I DON'T KNOW, G.. That sure sounds like a date."

"It's not," I say, for the umpteenth time as Soda and Darry repeatedly voice their stupid opinions around the Curtis's dinner table.. Okay, maybe they aren't stupid, just, wrong.. kinda?

I mean.. going to dinner with your half-friend, half-nemesis because you offended him, but need him to take you to see your runaway outlaw kid brother, isn't exactly what one may consider a perfect first date, that's for sure. More like blackmail.

"Okay, well.. if I didn't know any better, I'd say you're nervous," Darry says, knowingly.

"I'm not!" I lie, feeling my cheeks flush.

"You're blushin!" Soda teases, nudging my shoulder as he laughs at me.

"Aw shoot, you guys, can't you just quit it?" I groan, hiding my face in my hands. "What am I gonna do? This is gonna be so weird."

"Cause it's a date?" Darry asks, raising a brow.

"Oh gosh, will you two knock it off already? It's not a date, it's basically blackmail! Besides I don't even like Dally, he's an idiot, and so annoying, and he drives me nuts all the time, just for kicks–"

"–Ohhhh lordy, she's in love," Soda says, looking at Darry, eyes wide.

Darry's grinning cheekily, and nods in agreement. "She's got it bad."

"That makes absolutely no sense," I argue. "Did y'all not just hear me say 'he drives me nuts' and that he's an idiot?"

"Gosh, G, everybody knows 'idiot' is a secret term of endearment, in times of denial like this," Soda says, while Darry nods.

"I'm not in denial."

"Oh, sure you ain't," Soda says, rolling his eyes.

"I'm not."

"It's a date."

"No, it's not."

"Whaddya say we agree to disagree?" Soda asks.

"You can't disagree, it's a fact."

"Mmmmmmmmm, I dunno about that," Darry says, doubtfully.

"Guys, c'mon," I beg. "Please, just drop it.. Even if it were a real date, it's ain't like it means anything anyways. Dal just wants to feed his ego – he's just makin' me do this so he can make fun of me later.. and besides, we'd never work; He goes with girls like Sylvia, and I– well, I don't have time to fool around like that. I gotta focus on getting Johnny and I out of our.. situation, as soon as possible."

Soda and Darry finally quiet down once they realize I'm actually upset.

We finish up the rest of our meal in silence, but by the time Darry brings out ice cream for dessert, Soda's found a way to lighten the mood, per usual.
