Milkshake

I kept my head low while walking through the halls of my school.

I've always been left out. I never had a lot of friends or really got along with anyone.

Over the years, I've learned to be content with myself, reading books, and writing.

Ever since I got outed, life has been different, especially at school.

People look at me differently, and I hate it.

I was walking into my history class at 1 p.m., right before it started.

I took my seat toward the back of the class.

In the chair in front of me sat the prettiest girl I had ever seen. Her champagne hair fell just below her hips, and her tall and lean body made her look like a model.

All of her clothes fit her body perfectly.

She was, of course, one of the popular ones in school.

All I knew about her was that she was bi.

Not that she'd like anyone like me or even speak to me.

The teacher walked in and commanded us to open our books to page 54.

We were learning about the Middle Ages, which is one of my favorite time periods, so I enjoyed this class a lot.

A little while later, the lecture was finished.

I placed my books and papers back in my bag and walked out of the classroom.

Today was a half day, so history was my last class, and I decided to treat myself to a milkshake at Kopp's after school.

It was a short drive—maybe 10–15 minutes max.

I pulled up, and I guess a couple people had the same idea as me. There were only two empty parking spots.

I walked in to order. In front of me were a couple of the boys from the football team, falling over one another and talking in some language I didn't understand.

Behind me, the bell at the top of the door chimed.

I looked behind me to see who had walked in, and it was her.

She was wearing a white sundress with little daisies scattered across the fabric.

And a pair of red high-top Converse.

Her wavy hair was up in a ponytail, with two front pieces falling to the side of her face.

I directed my attention back in front of me.

I was listening to what the boys were ordering and wondering if there was going to be anything left by the time they were finished.

"Hey!" A soft voice called from behind me.

I whipped my head around to see who it was.

"Hey, sorry, I didn't mean to scare you; it's me, Aubree, from history class. You sit behind me."

She said it softly.

"Oh yeah, hey, I'm uh-" I was interrupted mid-sentence.

"Brianna, I know." She interrupted

"You know my name?" I questioned

"Well, yeah, of course." She laughed

"Oh, well." I said it nervously.

"So, what are you doing this afternoon?" She asked.

"NEXT," the worker called.

"Oh," I said while quickly walking up to order.

"Uh, just a small Oreo milkshake, please."

"Hey, I'll get yours; what do you want?" I asked Aubree.

"Aw, that's so sweet of you. A small chocolate mint shake." She replied

I paid, and we got our shakes.

"Want to sit together?" She said

"Sure!" I exclaimed.

We walked to an empty table and sat down.

"So, back to that question, what do you have to do today?" She asked

"Oh right, sorry, I got a little interrupted. I'm probably just going to walk to the water and catch up on homework." I laughed

"You're good. Do you mind if I join?" she asked.

I felt my cheeks warm up. I quickly adjusted myself, then answered.

"Sure."

"Ok, then, it's a date." She said this while I took a sip of my milkshake.

My head perked up as I tried to swallow the sip I had in my mouth.

She started to laugh, covering her mouth with her hand.

"So, is that alright?" She asked.

"I like you," I blurted out.

"Me too." She said.

"What?!" I practically squealed.

"Yeah, I just didn't think you felt the same." She said it quietly.

"You, like, me? Why? How? Wha-" She interrupted me; this time she leaned across the table, and our lips met softly.

She smelled like roses.

Time froze in that moment; it was magical.

She pulled away and sat back down at the table.

"Thank you," I said.

"Thank you?" She questioned

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean for that to come out."

"You're welcome." She winked.

I laughed, and we both got up.
