“No, no, no!” Tom cried out as he rushed towards your baby who sat on her little mat on the floor. “Don’t put that in your mouth, baby, that’s Tessa’s,” he shakes the toy from her hand, his brows pulling as the little girl frowned. “Here, sweetie pie, this one’s yours.”

You’re folding laundry in the bedroom when Tessa comes in, nuzzling up against your legs like she always does when she’s in search of a few pets. “Hey Tess,” you greeted her, folding the baby’s jumper and setting it in the basket alongside the others before bending to scratch behind Tessa’s ears. “C’mon girl, let’s go put the clothes away, hmm?” Tessa followed you down the hall, her nails clicking on the floor until the hardwood faded to carpet in the bedroom.

“Hello sweet girl,” you beamed at your daughter, her eyes glossy and her fist clutching tightly to the collar of Tom’s shirt. “What’s wrong?” you asked your husband, shifting the laundry basket to your hip so you could reach to stroke the baby’s cheek.

Tom catches your wrist in a kiss in the midst of your movement, offering you a soft smile before he speaks. “She was trying to put Tessa’s toy in her mouth, I think she might be teething again,” he explains, bouncing the baby on his side a bit to calm her down.

You turn back to where Tessa is now seated by your feet, her tail wagging against the carpet. “You hear that Tess? Someone’s after your toys,”

Tom bends down to place your daughter back on her playmat, a few toys scattered about that he’s careful to avoid. Tessa’s ears perk up, and she cautiously noses forward where Tom gently shakes her toy. “You think they’ll play nice together?” Tom asks, the corner of his mouth upturned in a grin as he watches you open and close drawers.

“I’m not sure how much playing will actually happen, they might just steal each other's toys,” you aren’t looking at him as you put the clothes away, but he can hear your faint smile.

“C’mere Tess, come play,” Tom coos, ushering the pup forward. She listens and comes a bit closer, still careful around the baby. “I’m not sure why she’s still so timid,” he sighs, watching his dog and daughter softly interact. Tessa bumps her nose against the baby’s socked foot, and in return, the girl stares with eyes as wide as they get, her toes twitching.

You shrug in response, bumping the drawer closed with your hip. “It took Tessa a while to get used to me when I moved in,” you say, small smile turning into a grin when Tom looks up at you. “I’m sure it’s the same thing.” He pushes himself up to standing and walks over to you, taking the basket and setting it down.

“Look at them,” he nearly whispers, wrapping his arms around you.

You, of course, lean into his touch and watch the two in front of you fondly. Your daughter's eyes are still wide as can be, watching Tessa’s every move with intent curiosity, even if she’s known the dog her entire (short) life.

“They do this every time, like they’ve forgotten one another or something,” you whisper, as if speaking too loud would startle them.

“I know, isn’t it sweet?” Your husband asks, eyes focused on the way your daughter reaches out and gently offers a single pat to Tessa’s head, her little hand staying right between her ears. Tessa moves a bit so she can sit directly in front of the baby, her head cocked to the side. The girl leans forward, trying to mimic Tessa’s stance.

“It’s the sweetest,” you nod, watching previously teary eyes brighten into a wide smile when Tessa nestles her snout in your daughter’s lap.
