Arvin was a hard boy to pin down. Boy, not man, no matter how many times he tried to tell you otherwise. Despite his tough exterior, he was soft on the inside, holding all the love in the world for those he cared about. You'd been his girl going on nearly a year, but he had yet to tell you that he loved you.

You knew he did - it was plain to see, with the way he protected you and kept you safe. Whether it was physically stepping in between you and the assholes who were trying something with you, or "defending yer honor" as he put it, or driving you home late at night. It was in the way he'd scrape together enough money to take you out to dinner, or in the bundle of flowers he'd picked and wrapped in a bit of twine as a makeshift bouquet just for you. Most of all, though, it was in the way he bared his soul to you in a way he'd quite literally never done with anyone else. You knew everything that he had gone through, and it made you love him that much more.

Still, though. It'd be nice to hear him actually profess his love for you, for a change.

"Where we goin', Arvin?" you asked for the millionth time as you stuck your hand out the window, feeling the air rush through your fingers as his car flew down the road.

"You'll see when we get there. Patience, doll," he shook his head, but couldn't help the lopsided grin that took over his face.

"Ugh," you groaned, tipping your head back against the seat, "ya know I hate surprises, baby."

Reaching over, he grabbed your free hand, "Ah know, but 've a feelin' you'll like this."

"Mmph, alright," you grumbled in reply, but lifted your intertwined hands to your lips and pressed a soft kiss to the back of his hand.

Not long later he pulled off the main road to a little clearing in between a wooded area. It was close to the road, but you knew you wouldn't be bothered there. Which made you a tad bit nervous, but you knew Arvin would never hurt you or do anything you didn't want; you trusted him with your life.

As soon as the car came to a stop, he hopped out, quickly buzzing over to your side so he could open your door for you. He held his hand out for you to take, giving you a smile as he spoke with a teasing tone in his voice, "M'lady."

Taking his hand, you let him help you out of the car, "Thanks, baby. What're we doin' here?"

"Gimme a minute, doll! Yer not too patient, are ya?"

You huffed again, but leaned against the car, crossing your arms over your chest as you watched Arvin. He pulled a blanket out of the back of his car and then grabbed a small basket that you'd somehow missed. Spreading the blanket on the ground, he placed the basket on top and then gestured towards it, mumbling somewhat shyly, "Thought you might like a picnic."

"Arvin..." you murmured, tears springing to your eyes, heart melting just a bit.

Arvin immediately panicked, "I-I'm sorry, if ya don't like it, I j-just' thought that-"

Reaching out, you placed your hands against his chest, over his heart. His hands immediately went to cover yours, "I love it, baby. Thank you so much." Leaning up on your toes, you pressed a soft kiss to his lips, causing him to blush at your words.

"Alright, 'nuff of that sappy shit," he mumbled, taking your hand into his and leading you to the blanket. Sitting down, he pulled out two sandwiches he'd made for the two of you, along with one of his grandma's homemade pies. "It ain't much, but I hope ya like it anyhow."

Your boyfriend wasn't necessarily one for grand romantic gestures, so you wondered what had prompted this whole outing. But you couldn't complain, not after eating too many slices of his grandmama's pie and laying in your boyfriend's lap. He was sitting up, legs outstretched and hands in your hair as you laid your head in his lap, gazing up at him.

The sunshine was warm on your face, and there was a slight breeze that made the day nearly perfect. Your eyes fluttered shut at the feeling of Arvin's hands in your hair, his fingers weaving in and out carefully. It was peaceful - so much so that you could almost fall asleep - but you could feel Arvin's eyes trained on you, and an almost nervous energy coming from your boy.

Blinking your eyes open, you looked up to meet Arvin's face, "Everythin' alright? Feel ya starin' at me."

"I ain't starin'! Even if I was, it's just 'cause yer pretty," he protested, cheeks flushing pink once again. You gave him a knowing look, causing him to stutter out an excuse before finally huffing out, "Okay! Fine! 'S just somethin' 've been wantin' to tell ya..."

Sensing his nerves, you moved yourself so you were sitting up, facing him, your hands still clasped together, "What is it, baby? You know you can tell me anything."

"I know, I know," he mumbled, eyes trained on your intertwined hands, the pad of his thumb brushing over your knuckles. He was silent for a few more moments, but then spoke up, still quietly, "I just... I ain't never told no one this before, but..."

As much as you wanted to ask him what he was talking about, you remained silent, watching him closely, admiring the smattering of freckles across the bridge of his crooked nose, his teeth pulling at the skin of his lips slightly. He looks so goddamn pretty, but you know he would hate to hear you say that, or, at the very least, would protest vehemently.

"You, uh, you make me real happy, darlin'. I never been this happy, and I, um... I love you. A lot," he finally got out, the last half a rushed and nervous mumble.

Your eyes softened, and you could swear your heart was beating a million miles a minute, "Arvin-"

Arvin panicked slightly, cutting you off, "Y-you don't gotta say it back or nothin', I just wanted you to know, and-"

Reaching up, you placed your finger on his lips to shut him up, "I love you, too, Arvin. So much."

You could see the relief take over his body at your words, a hint of a smile tugging at his lips, "You do?"

Furrowing your eyebrows slightly, you couldn't help but laugh, "'Course I do, you idiot." You quickly moved into his lap, knees on either side of his hips, your hands coming up to cup his jaw, "Love you more than I can say."

"Me too," he sighed in relief, his hands finding their way to your hips and tugging you impossibly close before pressing his lips to yours in a short but sweet kiss. His arms slid around your middle to hug you close, one hand finding purchase in your hair as he nuzzled his face into the crook of your neck, "Me too."
