Chapter 6

I awoke in my bed. It was a little strange waking up in this bed. I wasn't really used to having covers over me when I sleep, I was more used to sleeping in short shorts and a tank top without any covers at all. And besides, my whole life I've been used to sleeping on the couch. In my old house I'd start watching TV then I'd just fall asleep.

I sighed and stared at the ceiling. Another day of school. Joy, joy. Unwillingly, I threw the covers off and stepped out of the warmth of my bed. A shiver electrified down my spine. I definitely was not getting used to this cold weather...at all.

Right before I went downstairs to get breakfast, I remembered something. I looked at my nightstand and snatched my phone off of it. I checked to see if I got any texts. I had two. Two from AJ. I silently screamed inside. What was I doing. How could I like this guy if I didn't even really know him? Oh come on Amber! You know him enough! No! I can't! That's just weird. I silently fought with myself while reading my texts that said 'yeah I agree' and 'are you still there, did you fall asleep'. I sighed, deciding that the side of me that said don't like him should win...for now. Then I headed downstairs.

I was ready pretty quickly and my mom had to go to work early today so everything worked out. My mom dropped me off on her way to work, so I was pretty early to school, but it didn't seem like it because everyone was already there. Including AJ. Oh whatever. So what if AJ was there? Who cares? I don't. Do I? Ugh!

I walked to my locker, threw my backpack in it, and grabbed my stuff for Algebra. When I shut my locker, to my surprise, AJ was standing there. Waiting for me. "Hey Amber, interesting conversation last night." He smiled. His jaw line clenched, like it always does when he's around me. I stared into his big bright eyes and sighed, then regretted it. I was hoping he didn't catch that flaw, but, like always, he did. "What?" He asked with a chuckle. "Uh...I uh...umm...I don't know I just really don't want to go to school." I said. Hopefully I saved myself. He just smirked. "Okay, whatever you say." I put my free hand on my hip and tried to look annoyed. "What do you mean 'whatever you say'?" He shrugged. "Nothing, nothing." He said. Then he locked his lips and threw away the key. Wow...what is he 5 now?

"Are you 5 years old now?" I asked sarcastically. He shrugged. "I don't know. Would a five year old ask a pretty lady out this Saturday night?" He tried to say as nonchalantly as possible. I froze and my eyes got big. Then I looked around me. "Are you talking to me?" I asked, a little shocked. He hesitated, then nodded. I took a quick breath and my face got really hot. "Umm...Uh..."I stuttered. He should have gave me a bit more of a heads up. He waited. I could tell he was going to say something again so then I waited. "Uh..." He stalled a bit. "So, would you? Would you...go out with me? This Saturday?" He asked, then shoved his hands in his pockets and stared at the floor, with one eye peeking at me from the side. "Umm...Uh..." What was wrong with me? Just say yes!  "Uh...yes. Yes AJ, I will...I will go out with you." Whew! Finally! His face filled with joy. His perfect smile stretched across his face. "Great! Uh...well...see you at 7?" He asked walking away. "Uh, sure! I'm sure that'll be fine." I replied. I couldn't believe that just happened. I have a date with AJ on Saturday! Oh my gosh! I couldn't even move. After a while, I realized I was still standing by my locker. So, I decided that no matter how hard it was, I better get moving. I didn't want to be late to class and I didn't want people to question about why I was talking to AJ.

Saturday Night

"'Kay mom! Okay! I get it! Be home by 11! I know! I know!" I told her as I finished putting on my makeup. "Oh, it's just been so long since you've been on a date! I haven't had to worry about this stuff for a while. You know your mom's getting back into the swing of things too. It's not just you." I looked at myself in the mirror. "The swing of things mom? What are you, fifty?"
