I should've realized that I was in for a rough ride when the head priest stared at me like I had descended from the heavens, quickly looking towards and speaking quietly to the female helper standing aside from him. She nodded and rushed off out of my sight.

"What is your name?" The high priest asked carefully, speaking slowly as if he wanted to know if I could hear him.

"You may call me...(y/n)," There wasn't any way I was going to translate my name into Coptic. I could barely get by with a conversation as it is.

"I humbly welcome you to Inebu-hedj, (y/n), guest of the desert," The head priest slightly nodded his head before the girl came back with a few others, all of them wearing simple white dresses that barely reached their ankles. Pulling from my experience, they must've been servants of some kind.

They gently took my hands and led me to where they had come from, beckoning me through a few marbled hallways before opening a door that revealed a bathtub. Not a small bathtub like I was used to, but a communal bath that was large enough for twelve people to be in at the same time without crowding. The servant girls made motions for me to take off my clothes and I did so without fuss.

Yes, it was weird, but we were the only ones here. If I was an anthropologist, I would've been much more ecstatic about this, but I was more interested in the structure surrounding us.

After the girls scrubbed the sand off my body and rinsed the lathering off completely, they motioned for me to sit in the bath. Again, I obliged. The semi-murky water was warm and smelled of lavender and honey, possibly with added minerals which gave the water its color.

"Rest," The main girl quietly spoke to me before walking off with the others, my clothes draped over her arm. I took a deep breath in and tried to relax, but my brain refused to calm down and tried to piece everything together.

I had woken up this morning ready to face the weekend, excited to relax after an excruciating week of work in the lab. My morning had been perfect: I was able to grab a coffee from my favorite place, I finished reading one of my many library books, and I got to walk around the block. The afternoon started out great with a simple lunch followed by some TV watching and lounging on the couch. When I wanted to get my daily run in, that's when things hit the fan.

I found myself in a desert AND transported back in time to Ancient Egypt.

Letting my head fall back onto the raised stone platform around the bath, I closed my eyes with a sigh as I tried to imagine how I'd survive in this place. I didn't know the language very well, I was clearly a stranger here and would stand out like a sore thumb if I tried to fit in, and there was probably no way that I was getting home.

First step is to learn their language, I thought to myself as I sat back up, licking my top lip a little as I heard the footsteps of the servants enter the room again, drawing my attention to them. The lead girl from before held a long garment in her arms, offering to dress me. I stood up and stepped out of the bath, letting them do as they were instructed while refraining from covering myself in shame.

Yes, it was extremely uncomfortable, but this civilization held no qualms about being nude in front of others and often used it as a sign of social status if the depictions in the modern reliefs were to be believed. In fact, that's all I had to go on...but they didn't seem to ogle or stare at my bare breasts as they were covered by two different garments.

The first garment was a dress of beads, the upper edge resting just beneath my breasts as two beaded straps pulled them close to my body before resting over my shoulders, creating a bra of sorts with a floor-length dress attached to it. The second garment was a shawl that was pure white and reminded me of a cloud with the surprising softness that the fabric had. I thanked them before the girl led me out of the bathing room and back towards the main chamber where I had met the head priest.
