The romance between the two is a slow burn and is shown along prejudice and ignorance they had to suffer from the people among them. I loved how the forbiddeness of the romance is showcased by the nervous glances, awkward kisses and lingering hands.

Charlie, Lydia's son, is the key that brings them together and also acts as the emotional barometer of all the things that's going on between the adults.

He sees the love between his mother and another woman and also the hate they get for it and tries to understand it from the viewpoint of a ten year old.

The most disappointing part of the movie for me was the ending. Unlike the novel where we get a happy ending with both of them run away together, the movie chooses to breaks them apart at the end purely for the straight audience, further encouraging the notion that period gays should not get a happy ending.
