Chapter 20 Caught Red-handed

Isla paced again and again in front of Selene's room's closed door. She didn't have the courage to knock on the door or barge in after what she saw in the garden.

In her memories the young miss was a naïve girl. Sure, she had the arrogant air around her just like the other young misses of her age but growing up under sheltered the care of her parents, she didn't know how to handle the outside world well.

Constantly influenced by the words of others, she got lost in the dark world after her mother's tragedy. Not that Isla was complaining in fact that aided her to do what she wanted.

But though naïve, she was not dull . It didn't take long for her to start suspecting Isla. But before she could even try to reach out to someone, Isla started to spread vicious rumors about her with all the tricks she knew to isolate 'Selene'. It worked well and soon 'Selene' had no one to rely but her.

She soon let go of her doubts about Isla  after she defended Selene against some maids gossiping about her. The other maids who saw this felt that Isla was too pure hearted to defend the vicious young miss who abused her to vent her anger. Two birds killed with one stone. With everyone against her, Selene started to rely on Isla, making it even more easy to manipulate her and everyone around her.

Not once did she feel any guilt and regret for doing so with such a young and helpless child. In her eyes, Selene was had gotten much more than a worthless brat like her deserved from her very birth.

While many more deserving people like her, were struggling to survive and trying to make their place in this huge world their whole lives. In fact Isla felt it was good that she had fallen from her high place. Since she never even suited that position, just like her low-born mother.

Isla even felt that her stealing Selene's jewellery and embezzling her budget was justified since they were much more valuable than her own existence. Not that she ever used her money for anything other than necessary, which always puzzled Isla.

'Selene' spent all her time either in finishing her homework or practicing etiquette. Since there were few maids who went near her, Isla could easily do her work without anyone keeping an eye on her. Life was too good with all the money and jewellery she stole and sold.

Yet when she heard that her so-called miss had failed the awakening from some maids gossiping, she was the first one to leave 'Selene's' side with an excuse of her relative being sick for a leave. She felt that she was better off without a useless master like her even with all the money she could get. She had better things to achieve in her life than just money.

And it looked like to her that her young miss had grown a brain after that as when she returned she heard that the young miss had dismissed all of her personal maids except a 15 year old young maid to tend to her.

This led the plan to resign after returning from the leave to be dismissed by her. She then set her eyes on young master Alex, who in her eyes had most chances to succeed as the duke. But it's been almost 1 year since then and she still didn't manage to get even a bit close to young master Alex. At one point she even considered going back to young miss.

But that idea was soon dismissed after she saw her today. The look on her face was terrifying, it was like she was the same yet different person at the same time.

And her eyes. It felt as though she was fully exposed in front of them. Could it be she had been found out?

'Hmph. Even if she did find out she can't do anything about it. I have made sure all my tracks are covered long ago.' Isla thought, scoffing.

As she was pacing round wondering what the young miss was planning to do, she heard the sound of footsteps down the west  wing's hallway.

She looked up to see Selene who had reached her room in front of her. Her smiling face still haunted Isla, she sighed in relief seeing her normal face again.
