One Sunday night, a loud crashing sound brought the Otis family downstairs. They found that a large suit of old armour had fallen from its stand and the Canterville ghost had been injured. The twins having brought their pea-shooters with them, at once discharged two pellets on him. Mr Otis brought his revolver and ordered the ghost to hold up his hands.
The ghost became so angry that he shrieked in a loud noise and swept through them putting out Washington's candle and leaving all of them in darkness.
He gave out frightening sounds of demoniac laughter. Mrs Otis thought that he was suffering from indigestion and brought a bottle of tincture for him. The ghost fared at her in fury. He fled to his room, injured and groaning all the time in pain.
