A little short but I'll make it worth your while on the next update. *wiggles eyebrows*

Kylie

My eyes felt dry as sawdust. I try not to trace the cracks on my lips with my fingertips. I down another glass of water, hoping the drought caused by all my crying would subside. I bit on my lip and reached for the towel Christian has wiped my face dry. And speaking of Christian, his fingers toyed with the tips of my hair, his shoulder cradling my head.

We sat next to each other behind the counter, silent still. His fingers stopped stroking my hair for a split-second. Then resumed. "Kylie," he whispers to my hair.

I look up.

"Spaghetti?"

I sat up straight, my lips curling into a small smile. "And garlic bread."

"Do you mind if I make use of the kitchen?"

I snorted. "Why are you asking me? It's your brother's kitchen."

Christian chuckles, sliding off the barstool. He rummages through the cabinets and started the process of making me a meal. I hadn't been this grateful that I kept myself and Jessica stocked. That means, I have tons of pasta. The garlic bread is a must too. We, thankfully, don't lack the essentials. Although Jessica eats takeouts or orders in, I'd like to be prepared.

He stilled for a moment, his gaze on the counter. "Kylie," he swallows, suddenly tensed.

"Yeah?" I blink, sensing his discomfort.

His Adam's apple bobbed as he swallows again. "Vanessa Bennet. She used to be a meaningless fling," he cringed at his own words, "shit. It sounds more horrible out loud."

My tongue turned cotton.

When his gaze lifted to my face, I've seen something in his eyes that I haven't seen before. It wasn't the cocky Christian. Not the one with oozing confidence and his signature shark-grin. Not the overbearing man who doesn't care how people sees him.

This Christian was unsure. As if how I'll see him after the next words he'll say, matters more than anything. Although I'm not sure why. "Kylie, I rarely make right decisions in my life. I know it will sound cruel but, Vanessa is and never will be one of those decisions."

A flutter raised in my belly. "You don't have to tell me that."

"I know. But telling you feels like a right decision," he murmurs. His blue eyes went suddenly so soft and tender that my heart almost melted with them. Down in the deepest cavity of my soul, I knew something was skyrocketing into the slightest trickle of hope.

I shake my head, clearing my throat and stomping the hope before it sprouts in full bloom. "It's weird when you look at me like that."

A chuckle ripped the expression off his face. And then we were back to being just the ambitious Kylie and the annoying Christian.
