IT WAS NEVER THE SAME.

When Caius asked why the village was burning, reasoning the smell of smoke entered his chambers, Aro simply shrugged and told him that the humans were planning to expose them, and when Eden asked why they couldn't have just given them mercy.

Aro brushed it off with a dismissive wave of his hand and told them that. "Humans are incapable of mercy, so why should we?"

Caius stormed off to his chambers after that, with Eden following behind him and Aro looking at them both with curiosity.

Caius wanted to leave, but where would he go? His beloved, where all the plans and dreams are rooted, is already gone, taking his hope with her in that fire.

Eden mourned with him.

Then after a few months, Caius became cold, distant, and hostile. Not even Eden could talk to him, but she understood. She understood his pain, so she left him be until he was ready to open the walls he had created.

What Eden doesn't know is that Aro used Chelsea's ability to make Caius' loyalties remain. The same thing he did with Marcus when Didyme died.

Aro even offered Corin's assistance with making Caius content with his place in the Volturi, which Caius accepted, unlike Marcus, who refused.

It is a good thing that neither Chelsea's nor Corin's gifts work on Eden.

In 1705, Aro brought someone with him. The man's name was Carlisle Cullen, which made Eden's curiosity peak, with his odd topaz eyes and unusual preference for drinking animal blood than human blood.

How calm and collected he looks, wise with his years, the knowledge of everything and anything, maybe even more.

Her curiosity about the outside world made them close than ever. She saw him as a father she never had. He was kind and so patient with her questions, answering with all his wisdom.

It made Eden curious about his diet, and she joined him one day. It was messy and filthy at first, but she eventually learned how to hunt, but she still preferred human blood.

Two weeks into the animal blood diet, her abilities seemed to weaken. She felt tired, drained, and exhausted. Carlisle told her to stick with the human blood diet for her sake.

Aro disapproved of Eden's sudden change of diet, and he was glad when Eden started to drink human blood again.

Aro was getting envious of Carlisle and how Eden seemed to favor Carlisle more than him.

Carlisle let Eden read all of his journals, with his travels across the seas, his study of medicine, his research, and even the theory of soulmates.

Which Eden continually asked him about.

It was comforting that someone was destined to love her, accept her, understand her, and dream with her after all that she had done.

Eden asked Carlisle to stay at the Volturi for her.

Which Carlisle promised that he would stay and help her learn more.

That's when Eden felt the true meaning of companionship.
