Salim and Anarkali

29 5 11

In place and time where caste did bid
And ordered way that men would live
So every one to each their own
Alone would any comfort loan

A prince who's Salim, dancer sees
Who every grace her form did heed
But low beneath his caste she's made
By dint of law from birth to grave

Not even marriage deigns to scorn
Nor act of lust may alter norm
Though lust does many norms undo
Instead this thing would act construe

To lower Salim's rank as low
As one to whom he love bestows.
So distant Arnakali kept
His self-made doom she won't abet.

For love that bid not long abstain
Did also bid their state mantain.
And maiden deemed he far away
To keep his crown would need to stay.

But both forbidden love possessed
That put their iron wills to test
Until at last the dancer moved
As prince's will the girl behooved.

But Salim's father Akbar saw
His son defy the Mughal law
And many trials covert deigned
To have that dancer swift defamed.

But every one the girl with haste
Sidestepped with ease along with grace
And Salim's anger grew to see
His love his king did fail to heed.
