They can't get too emotional or invested when working a case because that meant they could get messy and reckless, which could cost them the case and lives. For some agents, such as Valentina and Gideon, when they have a case close to their hearts, it makes them better agents. Others, not so much.
Now, they never expected JJ to be the one getting emotional about a case since she's never the one at the crime scenes or having to see the horrors first hand. However, the one she was bringing to the group was something personal for her. There was one issue with this case that Hotch did point out while they were in the briefing room, "As much as we want to take this case, we have to be invited by local authorities. I'm sure that this friend of your aunt's is very concerned, but it doesn't work that way."
"I called the chief. He faxed over an official request for our assistance. This is Brooke Chambers." She turned on the television, which had the details of the case. "Her father, Peter, a widower, left her alone for the weekend. Polly Homefeldt and Kelly Seymour were sleeping over Saturday night. At nine-thirty-five p.m., during the town's pep rally for the high school football team, both Kelly and Polly called home."
"It's me. I know this is last minute, but please don't be angry. Brooke, Kelly, and I are going to take off on a road trip for a few days. Sort of our last adventure before graduation. We'll be back Friday night. Love you. Bye." Played the voicemail and JJ introduced, "Kelly Seymour left this message on her parent's machine forty-four seconds later."
