Chapter 27 pt 1   So It Begins

I rushed to the second door on the left and without hesitation I turned the nob and to my relief saw Anna, Saddie and Basil sitting along the ledge of Basil’s bed talking. I didn’t take in the background right away but it was huge, the room could easily fit at least 5 people. There were bunk beds and another bed  that was at least a queen sized with a pull out sofa near the closet.

“What’s wrong? You look sort of weird.” Anna tilted her head wondering why I was so jumpy.

I couldn’t have predicted my reaction if I had wanted to, I found myself laughing excitedly. That was overly embarrassing for me and I had no idea how much it was for Dalton. Anna looked at me strangely yet impatiently.

“Well?” Basil spat out anxious and eager to find out what had me on the verge or hysteria.

I withdrew myself as I bit my lip deciding what I saw was not something Basil’s vulnerable ears should be hearing so I wandered towards Anna and whispered into her ear.

“I accidentally walked in on someone coming out of the shower.” I muttered almost breathlessly.

A sly understanding grin made it’s way upon Anna’s face. “ How big?” She asked before quickly covering her mouth completely oblivious to Basil being in the same room.

Saddie raised an eyebrow before coughing out a laugh, in return I could only bite my bottom lip and look away guiltily which caused Anna’s laughter to escalate while a profoundly shocked look swept Saddie up.

Basil was antsy as she shoved herself in between Anna and myself. “ What’s big?”

We all looked away knowing full well that this was definitely not a conversation we should have been having in the presence of someone this young to begin with. Our eyes averted around, all the while pretending we didn’t hear Basil but this upset her even further.

“Hey? Hello? I’m talking to you guys!” Basil waved her arms  frantically in front of me almost maniac-like but it was adorable I had to continue to fight my laughter.

“You really want to know kid? A certain someone’s male genitalia.” Anna finished her sentence sending us all into an uproar of laughter.

“Male- genitalia?”  Basil mumbled amongst herself while trying to place the term in association to the object and when it hit her Basil began to blush excessively.

“Ohhhh.............. a................. who’s?” Basil finally caught on and by this point I had now made my way towards the bed.

“Is it ever late.” I yawned while secretly holding back a smile as I went behind the room divider to change out of my clothing and into something more suitable which happened to be flannel. I almost shivered at how tacky these pj’s were but that feeling faded when a sudden odd feeling of comfort at how at home I felt in such a strange place.

“TRINITY! I am speaking to you!” Basil stood on the other side of the divider with her arms crossed looking incoherently at me in almost a criticizing manner.

“Alright , do you know where babies come from?” I asked her as I rationalized to myself that if she knew about it, talking about something so minor wouldn’t be so bad.

“If you don’t know the answer to that then your worse off than me.” Basil giggled teasingly as she looked up rolling her eyes at me.

“From sex.”Basil then corrected herself and I still couldn’t stop laughing from her first response, she was witty for sure. I loved how she was just so blunt and even though she was just a little annoying there was something you couldn’t help but love about her.

“Your not as innocent as you look.” I added notably impressed.

Anna was exhausted as she threw the comforter from the bottom bunk over her head. “ We were talking about Ambrose’s giant male genitalia.”

“Actually it was Dalton’s.” I added shamelessly.

“Dalton?” Anna added looking at me like this was some sort of huge scandal.

I couldn’t help but feel embarrassed this time around as I made my way towards where Anna was laying and stuffed her over til she left a bit of blanket and a pillow for me. I decided that I would rather lay in a small bunk with Anna than share the giant bed with Saddie who was so pregnant and I wasn’t used to be around someone that fragile that I was honestly scared to hurt her. Whether it was that I rolled over or who knows what could happen to me but the further she was from me the safer she’d be.

“Night.” I pulled the sheets up when there was a knock at the door.

Basil sprung to the door and found herself in front of Perseus, he looked flustered to be at the entrance to a bunch of girls in their nighties but Basil held onto the side of her door and tilted her head grinning.

“Hi Perseus.” Basil battered her eyelashes staring Perseus down completely lovestruck. I thought this was hilarious, I wasn’t sure if Basil had always acted this way in front of him but I just took notice to it now.

“Hi, Trinity I forgot to mention that tomorrow morning we’re having waffles at Exodus’ with Onya so we can go over whatever strategy plan for the meeting.” Perseus nodded before turning around to leave, feeling slightly uncomfortable.

“Who’s Exodus?” I raised an eyebrow in confusion. Like I was suppose to know who people were or things around here when I’ve been here only hours.

“Ask Irene tomorrow. Night ladies.” Perseus made his way down the hall.

I rushed towards the door and shook my head in bewilderment. “ So you came all the way over here to tell me something in person when you could have just relayed a message through Irene?” As if Perseus made any sense at all.

I guess I had made myself more vocal than necessary because by now the door to the room where Dalton, Ambrose, Seth and Sarge were staying in was flung wide open and  to my lack of surprise Ambrose was watching us both oddly.

“Yes, I believe that’s exactly what I did.” Perseus winked playfully causing Ambrose to stare him down which I found to be amusing.

“Night boys.” I closed the door for the what I hoped to be the final time tonight.

“Trinity! Wake up.” Basil pounced on the bed until I cracked my eyes open a smidgen only to see a spot of what seemed like sunlight beaming down on my skin.

“How do you get daylight underground?” I moaned as I slowly motioned to sit upright.

“Gran thought it would be easier to tell the difference between day and night by having spot LED lights outside our windows.” Basil shrugged carefree.

By now I noticed that Saddie was keeled over her bed and at first I thought she was sleeping until I heard the vomit rise from her mouth into a bucket next to the bed.

“Eww” I muttered staring at her in wonder. As a Nephilim getting sick was a foreign idea, it wasn’t a completely outrageous idea but the chances of getting sick was almost unheard of.

“Ditto.” Basil pinched her nose to block out the smell.

“Where’s Anna?” I asked looking around to notice she was nowhere in sight.

“Her and Oliver went to speak to the priest, I guess Oliver wanted to get some early praying done.” Basil added before shoving a big suitcase in front of me.

I opened it to find a few of my belongings from Violet’s house, not that any of them had sentimental value to me since I decided having attachment to things in life only seemed to cause more pain.I figured memories were more than enough of a sentiment.

After getting dressed I headed downstairs to see Irene, Ambrose and Dalton drinking coffee and chatting amongst themselves.

“Ready for the big day?” Dalton asked forcing a small grin in my direction.

Ambrose came up from behind and slipped a cup of black coffee into my hand before speaking with such proximity that his skin nearly came in direct contact with my skin and that alone sent shivers throughout my body.

“Course she is, she was born to do this.” Ambrose patted me on the back supportively , but as convinced as he was I wasn’t so sure. I had to get this right and honestly no wasn’t an answer that I was willing to take. We needed them or else we’d be royally screwed.

“Of course I was.” I sipped my coffee before biting my lip.

“Irene , that reminds me who’s Exodus?” I turned to face her as she sat at the table reading what looked like a local newspaper.

“Exodus McHaffer? He’s the local gossip really.... He owns a pancake house on third.” Irene smiled wryly before quietly shifting the newspaper over and flipping it so I wasn’t able to see the cover.

I caught on immediately because for an elderly woman being suspicious was just plain out of character for her. Of course naturally that struck my curiosity and caused me to move closer to the table.

“Third? I’m suppose to meet Perseus and Onya there.Could you write me some instructions to get there?” I grinned waiting for her to start jotting down directions as I motioned towards the paper and ever so casually lifted it up to see the front page.

“Golden boy spotted with tainted Nephil. Are we safe or at risk to burn down too?”

That was the header, I re-read it aloud. “ Tainted Nephil? RISK TO BURN DOWN?” My voice almost exploded with anger then one more thing struck my interest. The article was written by a Exodus McHaffer.  To think I was even remotely worried about first impressions when large amounts were already basing their first opinions of me off of this crap. I was going to show Mr. McHaffer a first impression alright.

Dalton looked at the paper before quickly skimming through it.

“Don’t do it.” Ambrose immediately shot back while locking eyes with me momentarily.

“Don’t do what exactly?” I asked tilting my head to the side looking at him to see what he was getting at.

“Anything he deserves.” Ambrose let out a small laugh. “ Remember we want their help and beating their local gossip won’t do much for winning them over.”

I sighed even though he had made a decent point it didn’t mean I’d have to like it. All I needed was one good punch in the face, not even a big one just enough to leave a pretty little indent on his face as a souvenir from our meet.

“Since when did you start being all righteous, that’s Dalton’s job.” I teased lightly looking over to Dalton who seemed tense enough being in the same room as all of us. I didn’t realize how touchy and what a sore subject the two of them were to each other as of lately and I wanted to help fix their friendship back up. All it needed was a bit of realization of their history together and that saying..... how does it go. “ Bro’s before hoes?” Well something like that, wow I must be more exhausted than I thought I just referred to myself as a hoe.

“Dalton’s here for the same reason I am, to keep your ass from getting killed. Anything else is just an obstacle.” Ambrose’s harshness was loud and clear, his message made me realize that my life was an object to him. Even though I was sure that I meant more than that to him he was still pissed off with my little outburst and everything else that came out about Kassandra and Dalton’s history among the rest of the stuff that happened that it would take some time to get over that.

“You don’t need to keep reminding me, thanks.” I added sarcastically before rolling my eyes.

Basil ran up to me and practically dragged me to the door.  “I’ll bring you to third!”

She sprung the door open over enthusiastically and I saw Seth and Saddie were arguing and from the looks of it , this was some serious stuff. Saddie had her arms crossed and her eyes were all full of tears and Seth was running his fingers through his hair looking exceptionally stressed out.

I glared at the two of them, “ What’s going on?” I stood directly in front of them.

“Nothing, nothing at all. I’ll let you get back to work.” Saddie fussed staring daggers at Seth as she stormed back inside slamming the door behind her leaving Seth in front of me.

Seth touched my arm for a second. “ Don’t worry about her it’s just that hormonal stuff.”

I still wasn’t used to hearing his words inside my head but it beat having my head completely infiltrated so I could adjust to this. I nodded before pushing towards what the argument was about, even though it was none of my business their well being and capability to preform would be very important.

“How come he doesn’t talk?” Basil asked looking at Seth in wonder.

“You ever watch that show called the Nanny?” I asked  raising an eyebrow.

“Mhmm.” Basil eyed me curiously.

“You know how her voice is all funny and annoying? Seth sounds just like that so he doesn’t like to talk.” I joked teasingly but Basil actually contemplated this for a second before giving me a “ hmm that’s weird.” look. As sweet an innocent as Basil was Seth’s secret would be kept a secret by me and I think Seth caught on because he just winked as we passed him by.

Walking down the corridor that so strangely resembled the outdoors had me wondering just how far this Underground was, I mean was it just this city or did all the places have a place like this because in all honesty it wasn’t a bad place. As we made our way through the courtyard I stopped to look at all the plants and flowers in what looked like a green house where they grew all the plants. There was even a water fountain that was a good eight feet in height, of course to our delight there stood Anna and Oliver who were literally in every sense of the word all over each other.

I let out a loud cough before either of them noticed our presence and immediately pulled away and blushed immensely. “ So this is how you two pray?” I let out a small laugh.

“Well we did then we decided to take a walk to see the scenery and it’s just so beautiful here!” Anna gushed , at least she was in a better mood and less down on our luck.

“Can’t argue with that point, see you guys at the festival after the meeting tonight?” I smiled before heading towards the iron gate towards the town square.

“Doesn’t this place seem like a modern day version of Ember City?” Anna asked as she slipped her hand into the water that came flowing down the fountain.

I let out a laugh. “ Whatever you say Anna, you know I don’t read books.”

“It was a movie!” Anna shouted back before her and Oliver went back to making out.

I guess it was hard to not get sucked into the atmosphere here but still, romance sort of made me nauseous these days. Basil and I continued past first to second than onto third. It had cafe’s and little stores and then outside of Exodus’ was Onya and Perseus chatting casually amongst themselves.

“Hey Trinity!” Onya was the first to notice me and acknowledge me and it still sort of surprised me how casually she was towards me since earlier.

I just smiled in return before glaring at Perseus intently. “ Did you read the paper this morning?” I crossed my arms impatiently.

“Uh... I wouldn’t worry too much about it , I figured he’d write something as ludicrous as that. That’s why we’re here because he was the first person to distrust you without even meeting you maybe we can change his mind.” Perseus held the door open for both me and Onya.

While walking through I couldn’t help but notice the fat man who was balding standing behind the counter serving coffee and muffins to a few men who sat at the counter chatting amongst themselves.

“Nice article there Ex, really lit a fire there under the Elders arses. If they considered whatever it is that the outsider wants I’ll bet any money it’ll cause quite the riot.” The opposing man who was speaking was tall, limber with big glasses wearing a plaid shirt chuckling to himself.

“We’ve done things here the same way for as long as I can remember we’d be crazy to go and change that now.” The other man who spoke was actually pretty attractive minus his matching plaid shirt that his muscles just ripped through.

I bit my tongue while glaring at Perseus to warn him that if these guys didn’t shut up soon, I would personally oblige them. I inhaled taking a deep breath wondering how much more I’d have to hear when Onya slammed her fist on the counter causing all three men to jolt and glancing up in our direction.

“You three are worse gossips than any women I know. I’d recommend shutting your traps unless you’d like them to be shut for you.” Onya looked intimidating the way her brown curls fell from her face and her small yet toned figure stood there confidently as she eyed them cautiously. I almost thought I saw her hand twitch a little bit which led me to believe she might have been itching to start a fight right here which almost caused me to laugh. I guess in some ways we were alot alike. I was right though she was definitely fond of Perseus because the second he touched her arm she seemed less tense and angry. It almost seemed like the same reaction Ambrose had on me.

“We were...um... just talking . We meant no disrespect.” The tall man with glasses who was rather homely looking stuttered nervously before picking up the paper before making his leave while being closely followed by his matching friend.

Exodus looked cross as he furiously wiped the counter while cursing under his breath. The three of us ignored  them and turned to take a seat where the other gentlemen had left. I tried to ignore that panging feeling inside that wanted me to explode -maybe not physically but sure as hell verbally. I didn’t realize I had locked eyes with Exodus until it suddenly hit me, with little notice I stood up and firmly placed my hands into fists on top of the counter staring the old man down.

“Let me tell you a little something about that fire, THAT FIRE didn’t just save the Alliance and a few humans here and there. It saved all of your ungrateful arses because who do you think the Werewolves and the Dark Ones are going after once I’m out of their way? I mean their already recruiting and torturing Augurs until they turn, WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN TO YOU?” I paused slightly enough to find strangers who were sitting around were blatantly staring and I could have sworn I saw a nervous twitch come from the dear gossip before me.

“I’ll tell you what will happen to you, everyone you love will either die or be so badly tortured they’ll wish they were dead. As for you , you’ll be lucky if they find you strong enough that they would sympathetically turn you in hopes you might be useful to them otherwise you would be hooked up to a bloody machine like a f****** vegetable to feed them- consider yourself like an energy drink to them. SO YOU SHOULD THANK YOUR  LUCKY STARS I’M HERE AND THAT I DID START THAT FIRE. I lost any bit of family and  very good friends in this battle and I didn’t come here to be mocked and misconstrued by some local jackass who’s bored.”

By the time I had finished Exodus looked terrified for a moment probably picturing every detail I implanted in his tiny wayward mind. I glanced to Onya and Perseus with my peripheral vision and they looked pretty heartbroken but the harsh reality was this. Our lives weren’t just ponds in a game and the more seriously people took this the better off we would be. Exodus seemed to have manned up a little because he looked at me apologetically before forcing a small smile.

“Whatever you want me to do - I’m in.”
