I think we all have, at some point, agonized over the question: "What is love?" We need to know how to make our readers fall in love with our characters. How to make our characters fall in love with each other. So obviously, this is an important question.
And I think I just found the answer.

All your characters have a comfort zone, right? And as authors, shoving them out of that comfort zone in the worst way possible and making them squirm like they have fire ants in their pants is our specialty. And then we watch that character do everything they possibly can to get back to their comfort zone.
You know your character is in love when they actively go OUT of that comfort zone for someone else's sake.
