Act 3, Scene 1

Setting: Forest

While TITANIA is asleep onstage,

BOTTOM, QUINCE, FLUTE, SNUG, SNOUT and STARVELING Enter

QUINCE:               Right, this is the perfect place to rehearse our play. But before we start rehearsing, there are some changes for the Characters.

Snout, you’ll play now as the Wall; and Starveling, you’ll be the Moonshine.

ROBIN Enter, unseen by the Characters onstage

ROBIN:                 (To Himself) Who are these country bumpkins swaggering around so close to where the Fairy Queen is sleeping?

QUINCE:               Now Bottom, Go backstage and we’ll rehearse.

BOTTOM Exit, followed by ROBIN.

QUINCE:               Let’s start with you Flute as Thisbe.

FLUTE:                  (As THISBE) Most radiant Pyramus, you are as reliable as a horse that never gets tired.

BOTTOM Enter with a Donkey’s Head

BOTTOM:            (As PYRAMUS) If I was handsome. My lovely Thisbe, I would…

FLUTE:                  (Shocked and Afraid because of what he have seen on BOTTOM’s head)

                                Help! It’s a Monster.

SNUG:                   We’re being haunted. Run! Everyone, Run!

They all Exit except BOTTOM

BOTTOM:            I see what they’re up to. They want to scare me. Well, I’m not afraid.

BOTTOM Sings

BOTTOM:            The blackbird with its black feathers

                            And its orange-and-tan beak,

The thrush with its clear voice,

The wren with its small, piping chirp—

(TITANIA will wake up and will look unto BOTTOM while he is singing)

The finch, the sparrow, and the lark,

The gray cuckoo with his simple song

                            That many men hear

But they don’t dare say no to it.

TITANIA:              Please sing again, sweet mortal. I know this is the first time I’ve ever seen you but I love you already. I am the Fairy that rule over the summer, and I love you. So come with me, I’ll give you Fairies as servants.

Come here, Peaseblossom, Cobweb, Moth, and Mustardseed.

PEASEBLOSSOM, COBWEB, MOTH, and MUSTARDSEED Enter

PEASEBLOSSOM:            Ready!

COBWEB:                            Me too!

MOTH:                                  Me too!

MUSTARDSEED:                And me too!

PEASEBLOSSOM, COBWEB, MOTH, and MUSTARDSEED:                Where should we go?

TITANIA:                              Be kind and Polite to this gentleman. Bow to him, fairies and curtsy to him.

PEASEBLOSSOM:            Hello, Mortal!

COBWEB:                            Hello!

MOTH:                                  Hello!

MUSTARDSEED:                Hello!

PEASEBLOSSOM:            I’m Peaseblossom

COBWEB:                            I’m Cobweb

MOTH:                                  I’m Moth

MUSTARDSEED:                And I’m Mustardseed

TITANIA:                              Take good care of him and bring him to me in silence.

They all Exit
