"I can never forget the way she looked when I first saw her. I had never given the colour red much thought until I saw her hair struck with sunshine."

The first time he saw her sparked a series of firsts that completely entranced him. Capturing him in the most blissful of experiences.

They were young, she younger than himself. A tiny girl with hair the colour of the brightest fire that trailed after an older boy, a hand white-knuckled around the back of the tunic he wore. She was swimming in a garment far too large for her, tripping over the hem, it hung off her shoulders and flopped over her hands.

Dirt was smeared over her face, twigs sticking around her hair in a disarray that gave no image of what a young girl should be, though even then he was struck by how utterly bright her eyes shown as she smiled.

Alec could never forget the way Jane tugged at his hand insistently, drawing his attention from the fiery girl and back toward her. His sister had snapped, warning him away from the other children as they were never allowed nearby the parents anyway.

They had always been seen as outcasts among the villagers, their parents being wary of them on occasion. Even so, they had learnt to accept the fact, to take the hateful and fear-filled glances and gestures with a grace and air of dignity that would rival God's angels themselves

At the age of 7, the twins had a carefully constructed mask of indifference that they used as a fragile shield.

Though watching as this mysterious redheaded child with her hair woven of the suns fire tottered past, Alec felt something akin to a shiver pass through him as she laughed at something the older boy said, ridiculous giggles reaching him, and his treasured mask slipped as his fair skin blazed with a heat.

Not even Jane's harsh, disapproving tone could draw him away from the source of light.

Alec should have known that staring into the sun would only blind you, what a foolish boy he had been.

"Even now, not a single colour could compare to the red Robyn made me feel."
