In the stratosphere, a quiz competition was being held.
"Gokuu, who among us is best suited for the GSDF?"
"Definitely Macho."
"Alright, Macho, do you know what a bazooka is?"
"Well... I've heard the name."
"Why is it called a bazooka?"
"Uh... because when fired it sounds like... bazooom?"
"Don't live like stupid!"
Laughter echoed through the radio waves.
It was a quiz inspired by NHQ's variety show, "Getting Scolded by Deco-chan!" Pilots, fighting off sleepiness, realized that it was better to collaborate than to strive alone. Though it was a violation of regulations, the commander, Sanzou, turned a blind eye, and the pilots started chatting over the radio. However, as the conversation ran out of steam, they eventually started a quiz competition.
"I know."
"Okay, Dop."
"It's because the inventor's name is Bob Burns."
"...Don't live like stupid!"
"Hah, it's wrong?"
"The correct answer is... It resembled the trumpet prop used by the popular comedian Bob Burns at the time."
Boos echoed over the radio.
"How could anyone know that!?"
What was supposed to be a quiz turned into a display of nerd knowledge.
Gokuu joined the fray.
"Saruto, that's a mistake. Bob Burns' trumpet was a trombone."
"...You're boring. Don't be like Deco!"
That was a compliment to the correct answerer, by the way.
"Echo 1 to Topaz Squadron."
Being called by callsign instead of TAC name, the pilots switched attention.
"Contact established with Zebra Command. Relay your assigned attack targets."
Details appeared on the Multipurpose Display (MPD). Upon seeing the content, Gokuu felt a sense of discomfort.
"This is Topaz 1. Battleships and aircraft carriers are not listed as attack targets?"
"The carrier's aircraft have been wiped out. Zebra Command wants to capture both the battleships and carriers."
Surprised voices came over the radio.
"This is Topaz 2. Can we trust someone who makes a plan this insane?" Heggie asked.
"We have no choice but to trust. The command authority lies with them. At least the extermination of aircraft and repelling the Grade Atlastar have been successful."
"Considering the performance difference in weapons, it's only natural, isn't it?"
"Then give your opinion. To the high and mighty lord of the sea, that is."
"This is Topaz 8. Are we playing the reserves?" Tennyo, the JASDF's only female F-2 rider, First Lieutenant Makoto Endō, asked. Planes 8-10 had not been assigned attack targets.
"Yes, if there's a misfire in the first attack, Topaz 8 will carry out additional attacks. 9 and 10 will attack the battleship if the enemy refuses to surrender."
