Returning back to normal life after seven years and the Grand Magic Games wasn't as hard as you thought it would be. Natsu, Lucy and the team went on jobs, people at the guild partied and drank, and life went on normally. The spectral body of Mavis though, which had appeared suddenly during the Games, was here to stay.
You were sitting at the guild hall, holding a mug of tea and staring boredly at your surroundings. A movement and shimmer of light in your peripheral vision caught your attention and you turned to find the First Master watching you solemnly with her emerald eyes.
"(Y/N). Would you like to take a walk with me? I want to talk with you."
Confused, you agree and stand up, following Mavis outside as she float-walks on a trail leading into the forest, which seems to be the popular destination for deep contemplations.
Once into the forest, Mavis keeps walking briskly, but starts up a conversation. "Tell me, what is your connection with Zeref?"
You freeze, wondering how she could possibly know about your interactions with the Black Wizard. You say something intelligent, like, "Uh... what?"
She laughs, sounding like tinkling bells, and elaborates on her question. "I mean, I saw the two of you on Tenrou, and again in the forest seven years later. I'd say the two of you have quite an interest in each other."
You manage to nod. "That's about it, you just answered your question for me."
Her eyes turn serious. "I have another question for you. Do you think he is evil?"
The surroundings seem to grow darker as she says this, and you press your lips together into a thin line. "I don't know. The few times I met him he didn't seem evil, but the stories speak differently."
Mavis nods. "You know about Lullaby, Deliora, and the Eclipse Gate. Those were all his creations."
"It's hard to believe that he isn't evil after knowing all the death and destruction he's caused, but when I talk to him I just can't see it," you confess.
The First Master hums in agreement as the two of you emerge from the forest into a mountainous area, the trail continuing into the distance. "It's not a bad thing that you love him. He probably loves you back, but I'm warning you to be careful with someone like him."
"H-Hold up, what's this about 'love'?" you stutter, caught off guard with Mavis's words.
She ignores you. "I want you to see both sides of Zeref, so you can decide if this is what you want."
A small brown creature with a devious smile bounds across the path in front of you, its pointed tail waving back and forth. You and Mavis follow it until you see the solitary figure sitting cross-legged beneath a tree, overlooking the landscape below the cliff.
The animal leaps off the ground and lands on the shoulder of the black-haired wizard, whose eyes are hidden beneath his hair, but his smile is unmistakable.
You turn to speak to Mavis but realize she is no longer by your side. The First Master hovers behind Zeref, looking down at him.
"You were watching the Grand Magic Games, Zeref?"
