I found Jake in the cafeteria, drinking coffee. I sat in front of him.

He smiled, "Hi."

"Hi. I'm sorry about that."

"You're in scrubs."

"The patient got blood on my clothes, so I didn't have much choice."

He nodded and stood.

"Are you ready to go back to the house?"

"The contractors-"

"Reed called. I, uh, answered your phone. Sorry."

"No, what's mine it's yours. What did he say?"

"He said that we can move in and buy the house. I-"

"Sgt. Major Hamilton, Dr. Malone, I brought the papers," Lucy spoke, walking up to us with a briefcase.

I looked at him.

"I called Lucy. I figured you'd be working for a while, so we could just sign here, if that's okay."

I nodded.

She sat down and told us where to sign.

We signed paper after paper, document after document. I'd signed a lot of papers in my life, but never that many at once.

When we signed the last one, Lucy smiled, "Okay. I'll need a check and you're good to go."

I got in my purse and got my checkbook.

Jake reached across the table and grabbed my arm. "Bridget, you don't have to-"

"How did you expect us to pay for this?

"Over time. You don't have to pay it all now, honey."

"But I have money now."

He shifted his weight.

I sat back and sighed. "You don't want me to write the check."

He hesitated.

"You feel uncomfortable letting your wife pay for the house," I spoke.

He didn't say anything.

"Jake, admit it. You want to feel the power."

He sighed, but didn't say anything.

"Jake, we just signed all those papers. What are you thinking?"

He looked at Lucy. "Can we have a minute alone?"

She nodded and went towards the cafeteria line.

I looked at Jake.

"I can't let you do this."

"It's not that you can't. You just don't want me to. Why?"

"I'm your husband. I'm supposed to be supporting you," he sighed.

"Jake, the amount of money you have doesn't make you my supporter. You being here, loving me, marrying me, staying alive--that's supporting me. Support has never been about money; for us, it's about love."

"Dr. Malone, I think my heart just skipped a beat," he shyly smiled.

I smiled, "Can I sign for our house now?"

He nodded.

I filled the check out and waved Lucy over.

She came over and handed us the keys.

When she left, Jake smiled, "Well, do you want to go to back to Virginia and start packing?"

I nodded.
