"IS HE DEAD?"

Jesper whispered. He nudged a finger against Kaz's cheek, springing back as if he expected a limp Kaz to shoot him through the skull. The crows circled his body, looking down with petrified yet outstood expressions.

Natasha and Alessia stood nestled in the corner, furiously whispering behind the covers of their palms. "What did you do to him?" Alessia cried. Kaz Brekker lay infirm on a bed of rumpled sheets - his skin was ghostly pale.

"I don't know," Natasha hissed. She pressed a cold hand against her forehand, a frozen fire roasting beneath her skin. Her eyes were bright and alight, the effects of her powers flushing across her body. She was half surprised Nina hadn't realised. "You're supposed to the healer, you tell me,"

"You think I haven't tried everything," Alessia was shivering, her arms weak. She had never strained her powers so far and seen so little results. Some colour had drained into his cheeks and a meek cough echoed out his throat, but after that, he had gone still.

"Jesper, he's not dead," Nina said, slinging an arm around his neck. "He's probably just out cold after a few beers,"

"You know Kaz doesn't drink on a job," Jesper narrowed his eyes as if he suspected Nina. "And you don't just die like that from a few beers,"

"He's not dead," Alessia said dejectedly. She wheeled over to Kaz's side, steadying her shaking wrist. "He's just asleep, he'll wake up,"

"Do you think he'll remember that I poked his face," Jesper said, eyes wide with fright. "Kaz will kill me,"

"Kaz doesn't even look like he's breathing," Nina stooped onto her knees, watching his chest weakly rise and fall beneath the thick layers of his clothes. Growing up, Kaz always complained how no matter how many shirts he wore he was always cold.

"His ghost will kill me then," Jesper shrieked. "Oh my god, Kaz I don't know if you can hear me right now, but I swear I wasn't thinking-"

"For saint's sake, shut up," Natasha said. She stalked over to Kaz's side, her skin still buzzing with the effects of her powers. Her skin glowed, a hungry feeling twisting in her chest. If you put him under, you can bring him back... hopefully, she thought.

"You know, let's just let Kaz rest," Alessia placed a hand on the square of Nina's back, pushing her onto her feet. "I and Natasha can deal with Brekker, you guys go check on Wylen and Matthias,"
