Chapter 2

Maddie's POV
I wake up from someone shaking me. "Ugh, let me sleeeep." I whisper sleepy. "Can't do that nugget, you wanted to run that contest with your dad and uncle so let's get up." My mom says. I groan but get up. While I get ready I hear my uncle Will arriving at our house. "Hey!" I say and give him a hug. "Goodmorning Mads, are you ready?" Will questions. "I guess." I smile. "Goodmorning honey." Dad says to me and gives me a kiss on my cheek. "Goodmorning dad." I respond. Mom gives me a bowl of oatmeal and a smoothie. "You're going to need that." She says. "Thanks mom" I say and I start to eat. Today is the day. We are going to do a running contest where you have to run run three laps. One lap per person. Uncle Will starts, then dad and then me. And we start 30 minutes after eachother so I don't have to wait that long luckily. We each have to run 10 miles so I probably be dead by the time I'm done. But hey, at least I get to run again. My parents didn't really let me run these kind of miles because I injured my ankle a few years back due soccer. But with Uncle Will nearby they find it ok, so that's nice. "Maddie!" I jump up. "What?" I exclaim. "You were daydreaming. I asked if you were ready so we could go smarty pants." Dad jokes. I roll my eyes and nod. We get our stuff, get in the car and drive to the contest.

Hailey's POV
We all get out of the car and I grab Jay's hand. We walk towards the entry. Maddie is talking to Will about her soccer game this weekend. We sign in and I help Maddie to do her hair. "Are you ready nugget?" I ask her. "Yeah! Thanks for braiding my hear mom." She says and gives me a hug. I smile and give her a kiss. Will and Jay come join us at the start. "Goodluck Will, see you at the finish!" I say as he leaves. We wave and his group gets the signal to start. A loud boom sounds and they start to run. We cheer him on as he speeds off. "GO UNCLE WILL WHOOO!" Maddie calls out. Twenty minutes go by with waiting and then it's Jay his turn to go to the start. "Goodluck dad." Maddie says and she gives him a hug. He hugs her back and then comes to me. "Go for it babe." I say and give him a kiss. "See you girls soon." Jay smiles and he squeezes my hand. Again an loud boom sounds and the group starts to run. Again we're cheering and supporting my man. I turn to my daughter who seems to get a little nervous. I pull her into my side. "You're going to rock this sweetie." I say. She nods. Time goes by very fast and it's time for Maddie to start. I pull her in a big hug. "There you go nugget. We'll be waiting and cheering for you at the finish." I say. "Thanks mom." Maddie says and she gets to the start. A loud boom sounds again and I see my daughter speed off. I smile. Of course she isn't going to start slowly, she is just like her dad. It doesn't take long before I see a familiar face coming to the finish. The redhead finishes his run and gets handed an towel, water and medal. I walk towards him. "Will! You did it! Congratulations!" I say to my brother in law. "Thanks!" He says and gives me a one armed hug. We chat for a bit and then we see Jay heading to the finish. "GO BABE!" I call out and I see him speeding his last meters. When he receives his stuff he comes to find us. "Hey there." He kisses me and then turns to Will to give him a hug. They compare their times together and Jay was literally 1 minute faster than Will. Will is certainly not happy about that haha. All of the sudden we hear a loud explosion. People start to scream and run away. I look at Jay and his face has turned into pure worry.

Jay's POV
Maddie. Where is she? As soon I heard that explosion I knew it wasn't right. I look at Hailey and Will who both look concerned. "We need to find Maddie." I say. They agree and we start to run through the parcour to find her.

Maddie's POV
Ugh. My shoulder hurts so much. Something exploded and I was blown to a wall. I try to stand up and look around. There is a lot of dust in the air so I barely see anything. "Help me! Help!" I hear someone scream. "Call again!" I call out in an attempt to find the person in need. "Over here!" I hear. I get around some rock and see a girl not much older then me laying on the ground, glass is sticking out of her leg. She breathes heavily and definitely in a lot of pain. Oh boy. Okay mads stay calm and calm her down like you've seen uncle Will do many times. "I'm Maddie, what's your name?" I ask her while I kneel down. "Amy." She responds. "Nice to meet you, can you try not to move? We don't want the glass to rip your veins do we?" I say. She nods but cries. "Do you have a phone?" I ask. Amy nods. "In my pocket, but I can't reach it.. can you try. Oh my god I'm gonna die." She says. "No you're not. We're together in this and we are going to get you in a hospital okay?" I try to calm her down. She nods and I move over to her pocket, then try with my good arm to get it. Thing is that she is on her back and her phone is in her backpocket. I'm going to need to flip her over a bit if I want to reach that phone. And right now my arm is definitely not helping. But if I want to contact my dad then I need to. Okay Maddie. Let's go. "Amy? I am going to flip you slowly okay?" I say but Amy doesn't respond. "Amy?" I shake her arm but she doesn't respond. No no no. I check her pulse but it is very low. I need to call my parents. I quickly flip her over and pull out her phone. "Arghh! Shit!" I yell because of my arm and tears get in my eyes. I unlock her phone and dial my dad's number. I put it on speaker and check her pulse again. It's gone. I start doing cpr and with every compression my arm feels like it's coming of my body. "This is the voicemail of Jay Halstead, please leave a message and I will call you as soon as I can. Beeep" It sounds from the phone. No!! why? I continue my compressions to get her pulse back but it's not helping. "CFD CALL OUT!" I hear someone. Kelly? "OVER HERE!" I yell. A light shines in my face and when I look up I see Kelly and Casey rushing to me. "She needs help." I say out of breath. "Brett, Dawson we need you over here. Woman with glass in her leg, no pulse." Casey radios. "Maddie, we can take over." Kelly looks at me. "No, I can take it. I have to." I say with tears in my eyes. "Maddie come on, you're in pain and out of breath. Let us help you" Casey says. "What do we got?" Dawson comes in and starts unpacking her stuff. "Honey I'm going to take over from you on three." Brett comes in too. "I can take it, really." I keep giving compressions. "Maddie look at me. You did good. They are going to help her." Kelly says. I eventually nod. "Okay then. "One. Two. Three!" Brett says and Kelly pulls me out. I try to catch my breath but I burst out in tears from the pain in my shoulder. "Maddie tell me, where does it hurt?" Kelly looks concerned. "Shoulder. I feel like it's coming off." I cry. "Find her parents and get her to the hospital. That shoulder is dislocated." Dawson looks at me. "Come on, let's get you out of here." Casey says. I look back at Amy. Not wanting to leave her. "They will take care of her and get her to the hospital. She is in good hands Maddie. Really." Casey continues. "Now let's get you checked out." Kelly says as he tries to help me stand. "Maddie look at me. Can you stand?" Casey grabs my hand. I nod slightly but my head is pounding so hard. I doze off when I feel two strong arms picking me up. "Go get Halstead, we need to get her into a hospital." Kelly says to Casey as he carries me away from Amy, Brett and Dawson. I lean my head against his shoulder and close my eyes. "Stay awake for me okay? Your parents are nearby." Kelly says. We walk further to a row of ambulances. I see so many injured people that it makes me even more sad. "Halstead! Over here!" Casey calls out to a few people standing with eachother. I see my parents and my uncle looking relieved when they see me. "Oh my god Maddie!" My mom yells. They rush towards us. "She needs to go to the hospital, we found her performing cpr with a dislocated shoulder and most likely a concussion. She can barely keep her eyes open." Casey explains. "What? Oh god. Thanks guys. We will get her to the hospital now." Dad says. He looks at me in pure worry. "Dad." I cry. "I'm here sweetie. We are going to get you to the hospital." He says and carefully gives me a kiss. We quickly walk to our car and Kelly puts me in. My mom gets in on the other side so I can lean against her. "It's going to be fine, you're gonna be fine." She whispers in my ear. "Try to stay awake Maddie. Just keep talking to us." Uncle Will looks at me concerned. "My shoulder hurts so much." I cry. "I know baby, they are going to fix it okay?" Mom says and dad speeds off to the hospital.
