Everyone gasped, but to my ears,
They sounded like hushed, giddy cheers.
The giraffe leaned close to me, her black eyes
Soft and curious under veils of wing-like
Lashes. She chewed slowly, verdant leaves
Dangling from one side of her broad mouth.
I froze— her lazy chewing moment sates
My ancient hunger for things that fade.
I wanted to think she's smiling, even though
She's hungry for things that grow.
